Cloth seat dye

Curious to know if any of you guys have used a product to dye your seats. Been watching tons of youtube videos, but not finding any results over a prolonged period of time.

And/or on the dash and trim pieces.

Dash and trim you can paint. SME paint products. Clean use adhesion promoter. Then paint. Lots of write ups on yotatech and I am sure here. I'm just new to this site so I haven't found them yet

As much as I hate it when people ask questions before searching.. There becomes a new issue, especially noticed with these trucks..

And that is that most of the write ups, and diy threads are usually 10+ years old lol..

Need some newer content (in general).

So get some dye and test it then do a wright up on it. That's how is old timers did our first write ups. We tried something documented it and posted it.

And to add to BadVision's post, a bit more research will help too. I just posted not a week or two ago about using SEM (not SME) paint on dashboards and how its held up for the past decade in my truck that I still own!

Search here and the other toyota forums, read through the related threads THOROUGHLY, I'm sure you'll find answers and personal experiences with seat dyes and paints. And fyi, SEM paints are also capable of "dyeing" seats and carpets with their spray paints. I've never used it on carpets, just replaced mine with new carpets instead, but I've personally read through, and viewed photos, of painted carpets using SEM paints.

I'll admit I kinda rushed the question.. Im no noob to forums though. It just hit me as I was looking at my blue back seat when everything else is brown/tan/olive..lol.

Maybe I can find someone to trade down the road..

I have thought about this too. My interior is red/maroon/wine, and I can't find a matching head rest (you can find my post).

Although at this point I may consider just nice seat covers, that match the color.

but curious to see how the dye turns out.

My seat covers faded so I also want to dye. I've got tan 2nd gen seats in my red interior first gen, Ideally would like to dye them black.

Also can attest to the quality of SEM paints as I have painted a lot of my faded red/orange plastics with SEM color coat in Landau Black. Maybe I'll try it out on some extra fabric pieces I have laying around.

Where did you get your seat covers? Pretty much the only thing Ive found is some high dollar stuff that would be more suitable for a dd. I just want some plane ol seat covers in like camo, a grey, or even the 80s blanket style would be fine. Just durable .. Or grey seats lol.

The only color I think anyone could dye properly is black.

Or did you have the good seat covers?

Taking a break from shop work right now, thought I'd use my google-fu to see what else there is out there for you guys.

Here's another product that was discussed on a bimmer forum:

No idea whether its good or not, but overall, the consensus is, painting carpets and fabric seats will make them "crunchy", and the cheaper brands (Krylon and Duplicolor) were both reported to transfer to clothing and didn't last much more than several months before having to reapply.

Personally, I'd just go with some seat covers and not look at them again, as well as just buy a carpet kit in the color you folks want, but those two things can cost a good chunk of money, and I'm not sure if you guys really wanna spend close to 7 or 8 hundred bucks on carpet and quality seat covers (like Wet Okole).

Definitely post up what you guys decide to do though! It would be good info for a lot of other folks here who may be thinking of updating their interiors!

If you want to literally dye your seats, going black is probably possible from any color. But you would have to pull your seat fabric and put it in a pot with dye.

I just put gray seat fabric back on the foam core, and I can tell you it's a real pain in the ass to take it off and put it back on correctly.

Changing colors of a seat, even with SEM paints... I wouldn't try it for a seat to be honest. I wouldn't try changing colors with any high traffic item, regardless of material.

Touching up similar colors and evening out the tone? Sure. The SEM paints are great for that. Changing colors entirely? I wouldn't trust anything that's going to get scuffed, sat on, or touched repeatedly.

I just did most of my dash in gray and black SEM paints. I changed one low traffic item from red to gray (clinometer cover), and my new ABS dash cap from black to gray. I still plan to put my fabric dash cover over it all to keep it from getting scratched or touched.

I like the SEM paints so much, I'm probably going to hit my gray console and A pillar trims with the stuff just to make them look perfect after 30 years of wear and discoloration.

I cannot remember which duplicolor vinyl dye spray can I used but if you are looking to do the dark gray than its a perfect match. When I installed my inclinometer I sprayed it and it has held up perfectly and it is an exact match in all lighting conditions.
