Clownmeat's build thread

Had plans this last weekend but then stumbled on this thread.. Wow.

Question on the turbo:
Would it be possible to mount it right after the manifolds and the run an inter cooler? Instead of all the way to the back? I'm trying to avoid a body lift mainly.

I had the same thought initially. Was planning on trying to mount it after the manifold collector (where the two manifolds come together), and before the first catalytic converter (mine is the Cali two cat model). It would have been a low-mount turbo instead of a rear-mount. Long story short, it didn't fit. At least, not with the T3/T4 I have. Maybe a smaller turbo would work.

Here's some crappy pictures I took while test fitting. I had to take the turbine housing off to get it into position. When I tried to put the housing back on, that's when I figured out that it wasn't going to work.

Thanks! its tough to imagine where I could possibly mount this thing without actually having it. I'm just not sold on the rear mount option... maybe ill just make my own manifolds and stick it in the engine bay somewhere.

Nope. I removed the cat too, so the turbocharger is the only sound muffling there is. You can tell in this video it isn't extremely loud.

DAMN. Your truck sounds ****ing MEAN. Very nice work.

Why? If you look at the STS kit they don't require a body lift, they just run it down the outside of the frame.

thats a good idea, I've got no real good reason other than aesthetics and I'd much rather have a snorkel upfront. Its also just (in my opinion) super clean to have everything tucked up in the engine bay.

I agree, but there are trade offs. My rear mount cost $800 total to complete, an under hood system was out for me because of cost, like manifolds and stuff which I couldn't fabricate. Also I had no need for an intercooler. Under hood temps and intake temps are way cooler too, way cooler than the supercharged ones that see over 200 degree intake temps.

I'm about a year away from doing a turbo. There are several kits and such out there in the works but I keep coming back to this thread and I'm convinced this is the way to go.

You've given me one more reason to copy your setup. Lower intake temps and no intercooler? Sign me up!

Awesome thread. Thanks.

I don't know why I've never read this thread before. So much awesome in one place. So much more than the usual I lifted it and put some bumpers on it thread. So in other words, t4r porn.

What took you to Idaho?

Glad you asked. A 1998 turbocharged paddle shifted Toyota 4Runner that somehow made it 800 miles with no problems. But seriously, I'm originally from Idaho and wanted to move back to raise my kids here. I moved to AZ back in 2000 a couple years after high school and got married and had kids and all that but we just agreed that we missed: grass, trees, snow, cold, family, fry sauce, lakes/rivers, skiing/snowboarding, etc.

Did you tow a trailer of any kind with your turbo 4Runner during the move?

Just a single axle 8x5 uhaul trailer. I had to turn off overdrive a few times and I did turn off the paddle shift the whole way so the computer would lock up the torque converter.
