Clunk after Grizzley Locker Install

So after I installed my rear Grizzley locker, I've got a lot of slack in the rear pinion. At first I assumed that I assembled it wrong, so I took it back out and rechecked the backlash. It was off by about .003, so I tightened it up a little thinking I had fixed the problem. It wasn't until I drove it about ten miles that I started to notice it again.
I guess I'm wondering if it's normal to have any slack or clunking with the Grizzley locker. If not, I'm not going to fool with it anymore, I'll take it out and have a diff shop recheck/set it because I must be checking it wrong.

I went back and looked at the shop manual. If I'm reading it right, the backlash should be set at about .028. If I remember right, I measured about .025 before I disassembled the diff and set it back to that.

So I looked at it again. I set the parking braked and disconnected the rear drive shaft. The backlash appears to be fine and if you move it by hand, the pinion barely moves. If you use a bar, the pinion will rotate about 1/8-1/4 turn, then try to turn the wheels. I feel a little better about that. It seems to be part of the function of the locker. Can anyone confirm that theirs acts this way before I pull this thing out for a third time and take it somewhere?

Typical of a lunch-box (automatic) locker. The extra backlash is inherent in the ratcheting mechanism.

Thanks, that is the conclusion I had come to. I was worried I had done something wrong, but after looking at it again, I was certain it was supposed to do that. That's one of the trade offs for this setup opposed to an ARB. I can live with it a little easier than I can spending 3 times the money.
