Clunk gone but how many fittings on the driveshaft on the 07 4X4 V8?

Yeah that's probably it. When it really acts up you'll come to a stop and then there will be a certain amount of delay and then they'll be the clunk. You can also induce it by braking hard, even from a slow roll and it'll come. For me too when I grease it up it stops completely.

So the clunk returned this time after about 3500 miles so I just waited till the 15000 to change the oil and do it all at once. The U joints at this point only take 2-3 pumps before you can hear them express some grease. What I did do this time is I got under there and for the rear slip joint I kept pumping till I finally saw expansion of the joint. It took 35 pumps from my grease gun until I saw a small but clear movement of the joint. I put 35 pumps in the front slip joint fitting but did not see expansion. I am at 15,236 miles. We'll see now how long before the clunk returns. I'll report back, my findings down the road. We'll see if this gets me 5,000.

Don't know if this applies to our 4 runners (but bet it does) but I learned a long time ago while I was in the military (2nd Class Engineman) that by filling zerk fittings up with greese until you see some come out of the bearing or u-joint is way too much as you have now broken the seal to the u-joint and or bearing depending on what you are greesing. Things may be different now but I'm willing to bet they are not. Many people probably do NOT know this (including but not neccesarily) the average Toyota garage mechanic.
hoggy

Following up I searched and found this, somewhat consistent with hoggy. I'm probably pumping too much into the front slip joint. As far as the U-joints, years ago that's how we always did it, just enough for it to start to express. Probably less would suffice. Clearly it didn't need much. I'm probably going to continue to look for expansion on the rear slip yoke.

I just recently greased the driveshaft on my 4R and it's been awhile since the last time I've done it (about a year ago). I only had to use 1.5-2 pumps for the U-Joints. The old grease just started to come out after 2 pumps on the front U-Joint. If you listen carefully, you can hear the moment when the U-Joint is full of grease and there's a slight "pop" sound. That's when you should stop. I stopped after 1.5 pump on the rear U-Joint. I had to use about 25-30 pumps for the slip yoke until I started to hear a faint expansion sound. Clunk is definitely gone, but I guess I'll should start doing this each time I change my oil at 7k miles. Obviously, the slip yoke will require much less grease next time. If I remember correctly, there were a total of 6 zerk fittings.

Clunking in the transmission

My T4R '04 Ltd 2wd does that a little bit, mostly when I am creeping along at 45mph and it wants to shift into OD. Reading these posts reminded me of the time I was out of grease cylinders for my grease gun, and used the only thing I had on hand for the CV joints in an old Isuzu 4wd Trooper.

I went into the bathroom, grabbed my jar of Vicks Vapo-rub, and filled my my greaser. Then I lubed her up and drove it all over Texas and New Mexico. Not only did the Vicks solve my CV joint problem, but I swear the machine could breathe better, too.
