Clunk in Reverse?

well, i thought it was a freak thing but it has returned!

i went off roading on friday and when i got home i parked the car and all was good.

later that night i had to go out and as i reversed out of the garage i noticed a clunk, clunk, clunk as i backed out.

it went away after a while so i figured it must have been a freak thing.

on saturday i had to go out again and the same, clunk clunk clunk was occurring when reversing from a cold start...

today the clunk clunk clunk was there again. my suspicion was that the ujoint must have gotten busted up when out on the trail. i check and its on there fine and doesnt look like it took any damage.

i checked online and some people say it could be the abs self check?


i'm not quite sure this is the case because for the other 4000km i drove the truck on and off road this has never happened.


anyone have any thoughts?

i'll be taking it to the dealer for an oil change soon but i'd like to figure out what the heck is going on, either to put my mind at ease or atleast know whats up so i can avoid driving if i have to.

possible that it has loose u-bolts? but that should make noise in forward and reverse shouldnt it?

this only seems to make noise in reverse.


anyone have any thoughts?

I think that if it were me, it'd already be at the dealer getting looked at.

dealers not open on sundays so i'll have to wait to take it in anyways.

i'm leaning towards the loose u-bolts cause the u-joint checked out fine, couldnt see any damage to the u-joint.

if it was something to do with the rear diff it should make noise forward and reverse.

anyone else got suggestions as to what it is?

Doubt it is that. ABS check is quick, more of a clicking (1 sec or less) than a clunking and tends to happen when shifting from R to D.

I agree, take it to the dealer, and test ride WITH them so you know that they heard the sound you heard. Maybe have to leave it there the night before and get there in the AM the next day so it will be 'cold' and they do not doubt you.

yah, i think thats what i'm going to have to do. its really weird because it wont happen unless its a cold start.

i'm gonna get them to specifically look at the ubolt and ujoint just incase though. hopefully this is all just a matter of re-torquing some bolts

looks like it could be the rear brakes..

i guess i'll have them check the rear brakes, prop shaft, ujoint and ubolts.

im pretty sure it isnt the diff so should be ok

I had a similar sound last week. I was in reverse, then hit the brakes, and switched to drive. I was not at a complete stop (still rolling slightly backwards) when I shifted into drive and heard the clunk about 3 or 4 times. The sound was similar to a roller coaster when you just start to go up for the first time. It has happened just that one time. I figured it was because I was not at a complete stop.

FYI I have a 2WD Limited with about 3000 miles on it. I am not sure if this helps you, but it can't hurt.

sounds like a similar scenario but different rigs.

the clunk clunk kinda goes away after a while. i'll still get it checked out at my next oil change and then post an update for future reference.
