"Clunk" Sound

Hey everyone,

I figured I'd ask here to see if I could get a quick fix before I took it somewhere, but when I slow down quickly or turn I sometimes hear a "clunk" sound. The roads in my town this winter have been dreadful and perilous with potholes, so maybe something is just a little off. If anyone has and ideas/suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

You are going to have to describe it more clearly than that. What do you hear? Where does it sound like it is coming from? When do you hear it?

It sounds like its coming from the drivers side front axle-area somewhere maybe? I hear it if I'm driving and have to brake suddenly or when I'm backing up turning sharply, or pulling into a parking spot. It definitely doesn't sound like rubbing tires or anything - it sounds more like something metal popping into or out of place...hope this describes it a bit more.

It sounds like you have the infamous 4Runner driveline clunk. If you check the search function of this site, there are many threads about it. This happens in virtually all 4Runners and is nothing to worry about.

MY FRONT CALIPERS CLUNK EVERYTIME I SHIFT FROM FWD TO REV OR REV TO FWD. ITS LIKE THEY HAVE PLAY IN THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CALIPERS ON. ITS A LOUD SOUND TAHT APPEARS TO BE SOMETHING SOLID HITTING SOMETHING THIN. i HAD MY WIFE GO BACK AND FORTH WHILE I LOOKED AND LISTENED AND SURE ENOUGH THE CALIPERS ROLL FOR AND AFT ABOUT A HALF AN INCH AND CLUNK. Sorry for screaming. I just keep the lock on at work.

From your description, sounds like it's probably not the driveline thump. Maybe a CV joint going bad? Just throwing out ideas... let us know if you find out what it it.
