Clutch install on 1985

So I installed a clutch kit as the video on youtube shows. I did not install a new flywheel though. Got it installed with new master and slave cylinders and bled the heck out of them. I also adjusted the master cylinder to the pedal to maximize the master cylinder stroke. The problem is the tranny will not shift into any gear while running. What could the problem be? Its like the clutch is not disengaging from flywheel. Any suggestions on how to fix be very helpful.

There are many things that could be wrong here. First thing first, have someone push in the pedal while you watch the fork arm that comes out of the side of the trans. Is it moving? How much if so? If it seems to be moving try to look into the bell housing and you should be able to see the pressure plate back off when the pedal is pushed. I assume you put a new pressure plate on? A Factory Service Manual will be a much better resource for projects like this than a YouTube video. You can find them floating around this forum. Download one for your truck and look over it and see if it all seems familiar to what you did.

The slave cylinder moves around an 1inch or so at the end of the fork. I saw this as I was bleeding the system. I installed new pressure plate, clutch disc, master cylinder, and slave cylinder. I have the master cylinder adjusted to full stroke. Could the ball that the fork pivots on have failed or can it be adjusted? This is a pretty simple system not sure what the problem could be. Tonight I will try manually pulling the fork back with a crow bar and see if I can get it to shift. Anything else I could be missing?

I am not super familiar with these transmissions but I believe as long as the fork is on the ball and pivoting that all should be fine. If the fork is moving an inch I believe that's more than enough disengagement so it sounds like the problem is in the clutch/pressure plate or the trans itself. What led you to putting a new clutch in? Was there any shifting problems before the clutch change. If you put the trans in 1st while the motors off, press in the clutch and start the truck does the truck try to move? If not when you let out the clutch while running does is react normal?

did you put the clutch disc in correctly?

the springs go toward the pressure plate.

So for more detail as to why I put a clutch in in the vehicle in the first place. I was driving home over a 15 mile drive and noticed that shifting and finding the gears seemed to be getting more difficult. By the time I pulled into my driveway I shifted down into 1st and could not shift to any other gear from there. Luckily I was in the drive way. When installing the clutch I made sure the clutch plate was installed with the side labeled Flywheel toward the flywheel, so I am fairly certain the clutch disc is in correctly. I will try your suggestion of starting in first with the clutch depressed when I get home. The stick moves between the gears but will not actually go into any gear. Because it is parked in the garage I have tried putting it into reverse with only grinding. I did actual slam it into reverse later on but it just killed the motor immediately.

Thanks for your help thus far.

So put the tranny in reverse, pressed the clutch, and tried to start the truck and the starter pushed the truck in reverse. This tells me that the clutch is not disengaging but what could be the cause? The truck also shifts through the gears fine without the truck running. From what i can determine the transmission is a G54 if that helps any.

Well you said the fork moves 1" and someone with more experience correct me if I'm wrong but that seems like plenty. Its been a long time but I recall the throw out bearing being held to the fork with a clip. If the bearing housing spun and is not sitting on the fork correctly then it won't push the clutch in. Sounds like your problem is definitely either the throw out bearing or pressure plate not functioning right. As said before the springs in the clutch must face towards the trans or that also could bind things up. You just gotta get in there and start eliminating causes easiest to hardest which at some point might mean unbolting the trans. Unless you by chance got a bum pressure plate then it has to be something not installed correctly.

pull the boot off the fork, and look up in there while someone pushes the clutch.

You should have got a new throwout bearing with the clutch kit, did you put that in? Also did you make sure the fork snapped onto the ball correctly? If you put the clutch in correctly it seems like the only problem could be in the throwout bearing or fork. Pretty simple system yes but it sucks you'll probably have to drop the tranny again to fix what went wrong.

Yeah I forgot to mention I put in the new throwout bearing. Still have not resolved the problem, but it's friday so I will get time to work on it some more. I called the mechanic and he said it is likely to be air in the hydraulic lines, but I bled the system for 30 minutes running about three or four resiviors of fluid through it. Still did not shift. :thanks:

Did you bench bleed the master? I've had that reek havoc on me. But you do d say the fork moved an inch and it doesn't take much for the clutch to disengage.

So just spent some time bleeding the hydraulics again using the gravity method. I dont want to have to remove the line from the vehicle to bench bled it. On a good note I manually crawled under the truck and used a crow bar to manually pull the clutch fork back while my wife shifted into 1st and 2nd gears. It would not shift into any of the other gears and it made a grinding sound while trying reverse. All this was done with the truck running with the rear end jacked up and on jackstands. I know prolly not the safest thing but drastic problems call for drastic measures. The shifter I noticed is very sloppy and when slightly unbolted the stick will spin. Could part of these problems hapve occured when ai remove the shifter?

I had this same sort of problem with my 2nd gen when i bought it and it turned out to be the actual clutch pedal itself was broken. The mount had about a 1.5" crack in it cant hurt to check good luck

I think you need to pull it back apart. The throwout bearing is not operating like it should. I pulled a supra apart one time that had the same issues and the throwout bearing had ate clean threw the pressure plate fins. I know its new but something isn't right with one or both those two things.

Problem solved. Thought I may post the solution to my problem in case someone else experiences the same problem. So dropped the tranny again in which everything looked fine as expected. I decided to pull the clutch fork out to make sure it was not bent or have any issues and I notice the the spring retainer for the pivot point were bent and looked as though the fork had been pivoting on the spring. I used some needle nose pliers and bent the spring so that they would grab the pivot ball. Installed everything back as it was and wholla everything was working. Thanks to all for replies. Glad to be back on the road again.
