Clutch problems

I recently bought a 1991 4-Runner v6 5-speed manual transmission. I have very little experience in the past with vehicle repairs and am trying to learn to do some repairs on my own.

The clutch in the vehicle hasn't been working properly so I am asking for insight into possible fixes. It is often difficult to shift into first and second gear and is always difficult to shift into reverse. The engine will stall if I hold the clutch in for more than 5 seconds or so. Sometimes if I hold the clutch in for a few seconds and then release (before the engine stalls) the clutch remains depressed to the floor and will not return to it's default position.

I have already replaced the slave cylinder and bled the line once, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Replace the master?

someone might want to correct me but the master cylinder is vacuum operated so if you're holding the clutch down too long it could suffocate the engine. I would replace the master and make sure the lines are bled well. make sure all the air is out of the lines.

My guess is the rubber dampener line from firewall to engine, on lower passenger side compartment fender is deteriorated.

Clutch has no engine assist brake has vacuum assist. I think you have 2 issues. I think your in dire need for a tune up and may have a vacuum leak some where and I think that there is something going on with your master/slave cylinder and/or your clutch is going out or all of the above

Turned out the master cylinder was the problem. Thanks for the help everyone.
