Clutch

I'm replacing my transmission in a few weeks, and I want to put in a new clutch while I have it out. I have no idea what is a good clutch, or what components should actually be replaced. My truck has 209k on it and the new transmission has 136k.

I'm mainly driving on road, never towing, not a speed demon (truck only does 75), and I'm not rough on it. I'm looking for something long lasting and reliable, but not too expensive.

What do people recommend?

Generally you would replace the clutch disk, the pressure plate,and throwout bearing. With that many miles on it I would also replace the flywheel and pilot bushing/bearing and check the transmission input shaft bearing. Genuine toyota parts if available would be best(look how long they last!).

The flywheel doesn't usually need replacing, but should be resurfaced. Do replace the pilot bearing.

Unfortunately you can't by a new OEM clutch from the dealer anymore for that old a truck. You can get rebuilt Asin/SECO (OEM) clutches from a number of places though. Or a decent one from NAPA, etc. will work fine for a DD/occaisional wheeler.

If you are doing this yourself please be aware that the new pressure plate has a balance mark (usually a stamped X) near one bolt hole. This must be aligned with the corresponding mark on the flywheel which is why I recommend you get them as a set. If this is not done correctly the results can literally be explosive. No joke!

I've got a good repair manual, and my friend is a very good mechanic, so he know's what he's doing.

The pilot bearing is actually one of my problems right now (at least I think so by the grinding sound of my transmission).

I'm thinking about something after market, so where is a good place to go, and what model.

Also, where can I get a replacement pilot bearing.

I went with LC Engineering's Pro Clutch kit. It has 2x OEM holding power but no additional pedal resistance. Here is a link:

I didn't post this before because you said cheap....now you seem to be leaning to something a step up from NAPA. You can't go wrong with this clutch, just have the flywheel skimmed, as Fourwd1 suggested.

I'm not looking for anything fancy at this point. I'm planning on eventually doing a full engine rebuild and do some upgrades in a few years, but for now, I'm not sure how long this truck will last, and I need to stretch my funds so that I can get my $700 in tires, fix my 4WD and my transmission before the snow hits.
