Cobra 75 WXST install in 5th gen

Finally got around to installing a CB radio this weekend. I went with the Cobra 75 WX ST for a stealth install.*

Somehow I neglected to order an antenna mount, so I'll have to run with this Radio Shack cheapie for now. Maybe I'll pull it off and spray it black.*

For power I tapped into where they installed my aftermarket heated seats. The fifth fuse down on the right isn't usually there. It is in when the key is at ON, but not ACC.

I Dremeled a hole in the arm rest for the handset attachment. The cord fits through the existing notch so the lid closes. I used some 3M sticky tape to hold the control box under the arm rest, right next to the hole.*

I used a small jumper to ground the antenna mount to the rack. The Bajarack is powdercoated and doesn't conduct. Now there is a nice connection to the chassis ground.*

I ran the antenna cable in the hatch and under door sills, under the driver seat and into the center console.*

The third pic shows the handset connection. I didn't install the little hanger for it since I didn't want to drill any more holes. I just throw it in the 4WD boot, used it all last week and it works great doing that.

The box is circled in red. It's just tucked up in the front of the arm rest.

Hah! I made my wife help for most of the install. I'm an EE so I was being super picky with the wiring. She just about had enough at this point and was tired of me taking picture for 'teh forum'. :

Ryan that set-up and mount look great! :art: If you want, you could spray the mount black to match the rack - it won't change your SWR!

I strongly recommend that you put some sealant or weather proof tape (COAX SEAL) around the bolts that the ground wire is connected to so those connections don't corrode over time. Once that happens, you'll lose your signal. It's real easy to apply and I believe Radio Shack still carries it!

SWR ~1.1 - 1.3ish. I didn't spend much time tuning since I only use it on the trails.

Very nice install . Where would you have mounted an antenna if you didn't have a roof rack ? I haven't looked , but that Cobra , is that a AM only or SSB too ?

Cobra 75 Install

I have the same one, it works great. I'm just using a mag mount on the roof until I get the bumper on….

I'd be curious to see how you mount to the ARB bumper when you get it. I just put the ARB on my 2012. I have the Cobra 75 too, but haven't installed yet. I want to use the holes on top of the bumper, which I think are really for lights. However, these are 5/8" dia. holes and the standard K4 stud is for 1/2" holes. I bought some nylon spacer/washers at the local hardware store, but if I use 1/2" i.d. washer on the bottom to make up for the 5/8" hole I need to assure that washer doesn't slip and ground out. Maybe I'll epoxy it on.

What were your plans for mounting?

I'm curious how hard it was removing the storage box under armrest for install? Any pointers on that? I'm doing the exact same radio on my 2012.

Which cord do you buy for roof rack

Bump.... This instal is great... Can you please post the part#'s or names for the cord and where it connects to the antenna... which cord etc. (fire-ring?) to antenna?

There are so Many different attachments, want to try to make sure I get the correct ones since a lot of the great write-ups all use the diamond k400 mount so without that I am unsure what to buy when attaching to a roof rack.

what does your roofrack mount to? straight to the body? i have the exact same mount for my 3rd gen and i was thinking of just chipping the paint off my rola rack, but im not sure if that would be enough ground.

Install question

Hi,

I love the simplicity of the install I am just wondering if by running the cb antenna cable through the tailgate hatch if there is any chance of water leaking over time?
If not I am definitely looking into this.
Just have to find a place to mount my cobra 29 with night watch weather and all the goodies.

yeah im wondering about leaks putting the cable through the hatch like that. will probably try to mimic the control box install w 3m velcro and let the mic run out of the arm rest.
