COB's '89 Supra Turbo

Subscribed. My Supra was definitely the most fun car I have ever owned. Mine put down 430 hp with the Lexus V8 AFM and Mazda RX7 550 cc injectors, a down pipe and HKS exhaust, Toyota CT26 turbo with a 60-trim wheel upgrade and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

They are certainly easy to get power from.

Under the spoiler was pretty dirty. Had to get under there to remove the antenna, which has a bent mast. Already appears someone broke one of the clips and tried to glue it back.

You are definitely doing this the right way. One recommendation I have is to use ARP head bolts rather than head studs. If you use studs, you cannot remove the cylinder head with the engine in the car. I ran 17 pounds of boost in my MKIII for years on ARP headbolts with no issue.

Excited to see what you do with the car. I still think the MKIII is one of the most fun cars you can buy. If you have any 7M-GTE questions, feel free to ask-away; I've been through my own engine as well as helping friends with theirs.

Very interesting note on the head not coming out with studs.

Your car was a definite looker, that engine bay is very clean. I have essentially the same plan for getting the build going, lexus AFM, 550cc injectors, AFPR, etc... I'll keep this thread updated and your input will be appreciated! The build is starting from the ground up, so machining the block will be the first part of the engine build to get money thrown at it.

I am guessing your CT-26 was one of the older driftmotion 60mm upgrades? They're only going 57mm on their upgrades nowadays, although I am guessing the 57 can handle 17PSI pretty reasonably. I think using the CT-26 is the best option, especially here in CA, where police may be interested in what's under the hood. An upgraded CT-26 shouldn't raise any suspicions, especially with some factory heatshields.

Unfortunately, an item was dropped on my targa top which scratched it pretty badly. Sometimes people make mistakes, and this ones being paid for by the top scratcher herself, my girlfriend :ballchain:

Body shop destroyed my headliner.... VERY upset.... The owner is a friend of mine and he reassured me time and time again that nothing would happen to the headliner.

On their coin, they've sent the top to an upholstery shop who is redoing the headliner and rewrapping the sunvisors. Body shop is also installing new targa top seals for the inconvenience.

Top and rear bumper are painted.



SOON:

I'm in discussions with the owner of a white 89 Supra. It has a good interior with uncracked dashboard and variety of other parts my car needs - Donor Supra.

The Lexus AFM and 550 cc injector was pretty much a revelation in the Supra world...the 24% increase in size of the Lexus V8 MAF over the Supra MAF, combined with the 25% increase in injector size (440cc to 550cc) was a perfect match, not to mention it keeps the engine bay looking stock for CA smog checks. When I took mine in for smog every two years, I would swap in the original downpipe and remove the AFPR and it would pass visual and the sniffer everytime. (I would not have used the AFPR unless my car needed it--it was the only immediate giveaway that it wasn't stock.)

Mine was rebuilt and upgraded by Performance Techniques. (turbocharged.com)
I think the new 57 trim wheel is more efficient than the Garrett 60 trim my car had, so I think that is a better way to go anyway.

Car looks fantastic, reminds me of my friend's white 91 hardtop/sunroof that I wanted really bad, haha. Looking forward to watching the progress.

Aww shit... what if i use the automatic parts for a manual swap?

Think about it... I'll shave down the auto pedal and put a clutch pad on it, no difference probably between that and a manual brake pedal...

LOL it may have an automatic shifter but there's nothing under there, just a linkage without a purpose. :violin:

If there's anything, this car was the first I sourced a trans for, so I have a lot of the manual trans stuff separately... shouldn't swapping the good Supra be enough? haha

Here's my list of parts I'm keeping so far... many parts for future keeping in case. Parting the rest with the intention to put profit funds towards a motor build.

Dashboard
rear crash barrier (mines dented from a fender bender)
entire core support
headlights, folding mechanisms
blue interior and panels, interior screws, clips, covers
trunk and hood struts


and any other random parts I may need along the way

A very good friend of mine has the same exact car (but his is a stick) and it's very modded, to the tune of 500+ HP at the wheels. The car is an absolute blast to drive on the highway, but it's not much fun on the back roads because the turbo is too big and takes too long to spool up. He doesn't even get any real boost until he's over 4000 rpm.

Awesome, sounds like he must have a pretty big turbo on that thing. Yeah it's a definite cruiser, highway star, grand tourer... can't wait to get this thing built and on the road!
 
Found a manual brake pedal - just need a clutch master and slave and the hydraulic system is ready.

I found a really good deal on craigslist for a couple of the wheels I have been wanting - Enkei RPF1 18x8, +35. Two for the price of one pretty much.

I only have two so far, but since it'll be a while, I'm in no rush to find others. A couple on craigslist right now I might look into, 10.5 width... those would make nice rears.

Coilovers would really set this thing off.
