Code 0171

I was using my 99 limited 4x4 with 61K miles to do a little towing the other day and the engine was pinging pretty badly. Sure enough the check engine light came on. The code was 0171 - Too lean bank one.

Does anyone know what this really means?

I have not done the 60K service yet, it's on my list for the next few weeks. If I had to guess, I'd say O2 sensor but I'd appreciate any input from someone woth more experience than me.

Just in case anyone is interested, I called my local Toyota dealer who is generally a little pricy but always treated me properly otherwise and spoke with a mechanic.

He tells me the 0171 on the 4Runner is a mass air flow sensor.

Toyota will sell me the part for $145 plus $160 to install. I can do the labor but the interesting thing is everyone else sells the part for signifacntly more!

I hope this helps someone else in the future!

Man, thats cheap. I got hte code too and everywhere I go I'm quoted around $500 for a 96-98 MAF.

Actually, I found one on ebay, brand new... delivered to the door for $80.

there were a few more on there...

Oh my god what a rip off!!! There are just 2 screws that hold this in place, I don't know where the stealorship gets off over charging customers for a simple task!

The screws were a little tough to get to, had to move another component out of the way but in total it took 15 minutes.

The truck is running great... I'm not a big fan of the dealers and I thought I found a good one!

OMG all you have to do is spray the filamet wires and the iat sensor with brake clean or electrical cleaner.. and that fixes it...
