Code P0442 showed up

Finally got the code number of P0442. It lists the following possibilities - defective fuel cap, EVAP cannister, purge or vent solenoid defective, vacuum leak at engine.

Any ideas which one? What do I look at first? I have an 02 limited. Will it hurt the vehicle if I continue driving it?

from the FSM as you stated some of the possible causes. I have the same code, could be a long list of things. Will not hurt the vehicle. could lose fuel mileage and be rough running.

I would reseat your gas cap first.
No it won't hurt if you continue driving with this check engine code short term.

If reset how long before the cel shows up again (miles/time)?

Once every few months mine will get a 440 but only when wheeling offroad slow and vehicle rocking back/forth on rocks/ruts/holes. Reset and won't come back for months. Despite that all works as it should. Hmmm. :cowboy:

If the 442 is the small leak code, it could be a loose or bad gas cap. Absent that, visually inspect all the evap lines under the hood and around the canister on the driver side.

Start with the gas cap, and get an OEM. I had the same thing happen about 1 month after purchasing my 4runner. I replaced it with one from Autozone, and it only lasted about a year. Put an OEM on over a year ago, and no issues since.

Nope. Doesn't mean the Evap system is not leaking. The charcoal canister can be leaking inside itself and throw the code.

As others have stated, there is a list of things that could be your cause. In my case it was a hairline crack in the EVAP canister. I fixed it by pulling it out and using some RTV around the bottom.

Might not be your issue, but it if is, you might be able to make a cheap repair instead of replacement if your trouble shooting gets you to the EVAP canister.

Thanks everyone. I found a Jack in the seal for the gas cap. Ordered it from the dealership and will install tomorrow. I disconnect the battery and hope for the best.

Got my new gas cap from the dealership today. Found out I was missing the rubber O Ring. Hope this solves the problem.

My P0442 popped up in January with 218k miles at sea level, i replaced the gas cap with an OEM one, came back again in March with 220.6k miles at 6,000 feet altitude (i cleared it without doing anything - hoping it was altitude related) then it just popped up again with 222.1k miles tonight again at sea level. I guess I'll look into the charcoal canister and troubleshoot as this guy suggests on youtube? YouTube

Sounds like that small crack on the bottom is common and RTV is a strong enough fix vs buying a new part?

Its the check valve on top of the tank. The gasket fails and the top of the valve develops a hair line crack. I just did this last week.

All you need a jack, 14mm, 12mm, extension, pilers screw, drivers and some patience. Its actually not that hard of a job. just kind of tedious and make sure you have the tank nearly empty.
