From what I've read one of the possible causes of this code is topping off the tank. I never do that, but I do refuel from a gas can with a siphon frequently. The reason is I get gas points at the grocery store, and when I redeem them I can get 25 gallons. The 4Runner doesn't hold that much, so I put the rest into gas cans. They allow you to do that but you cant run two cars through, don't know why.
So then I just use a siphon and put that gas into the 4Runner when it's low. The thing is, the end of the siphon hose is almost too big to fit through the narrow point at the top of the fill tube. If you're using a pump at the gas station the neck goes roughly 10 inches or so past that point, but when I refuel from the gas can I barely get the tip of the hose through that narrow opening near the top. I looked in there with a flashlight and just a few inches further in I see a vent at the top of the fill tube, which I assume is part of the EVAP system. Even thought it's facing down if I'm spraying fuel right at it would that effectively be the same as overfilling the tank?
I was thinking of replacing the gas cap and VSV as the starting point, but if I've actually damaged the charcoal canister that's gonna suck. I always listen for the pressure change when removing the gas cap and since this code popped up I frequently don't hear anything.
This is a 2002, with the canister and VSV in the back, near the spare tire. I assume that's where I should start with troubleshooting, but if there's something else I should try I'm all ears.
