Hey all, just pulled this code out of my '02 Sport Edition. Trying to find the location of sensor neer back of transmission and possibly a part number. Thanks!

PM me your email address and I can send you a PDF with more than you probably care to know about it. (but the location and stuff is in there with a nice picture too):thumb3:

CEL light came on the other day. Runs and drives fine, transmission shifts fine also. Went to AutoZone and had the code read which was P1700. They had no other information to offer and reset the CEL. I was driving today and was coasting to a red light, the light turned green before I applied the brakes so I gently accelerated and immediately the CEL came back on. So I'm guessing it is the speed sensor. Thanks EatonKyleH for the info! Does anyone know what the part number is? I've looked all over and can't seem to find it.

Sorry had the pdf on my laptop from previous emails sent but not the part number handy.

Anyway I'm back at work today and looked it up.

VSS code was P0500 for me. My rig was all sorts of pissed until it was fixed. Mine just needed some jimmying back into place on the tranny and voila. I will verify that PO770 means new tranny. Hopefully your fix is good.

Do one of you have a P0770?

it's P0770 - Shift Solenoid E Malfunction

anyway if so I can send you testing procedures if needed
I just was unaware of why that code is being brought up and if you needed any info on it.

thanks, man - just saw the thread and contributed based on my experience see thread- sunk the 4runner x 2. P0770 even from Toyota master tech generally means failed tranny is not far off. I guess mine isn't really relevant other than the VSS code. Thanks for the offer, though -

My sensor came in today from toyotapartsales.com, but when I crawled underneath the truck I couldn't find an exact spot to put it that matches. It looks like it should go where the blank cover is, not where the existing one is. Can I put it there? How would I cover up the other (old) one if I did that. Or is there a different speed sensor for a '96. I did buy an OEM 89411-50010 sensor. Note: The plug does seem to match, so maybe I can just move the sensor to the other spot and leave the old dead sensor where it is?

Thanks guys for your help!

Thanks guys for your help!

Putting it in the blank hole won't do anything.
It appears I gave you the wrong sensor part number as I just searched generically on 1996.

You'll need to order it by VIN. Sorry man.

If they give you that same number I'll try to get you some better pictures.

Funny thing is toyotapartsales.com is supposed to verify the part against the VIN. It was one of the first '96 out (we bought it brand new). Maybe they changed it after initial production run? Ill post the real part number once I figure it out. I already wrote a note to toyotapartsales.com

Thanks again!

Kyle, The Parts department is telling me the part in my picture is a Transmission Revolution Sensor, p/n 89413-08020. Do you think that would throw a P1700 code as well?

It sure would.

Transmission revolution sensor is a fancy name for transmission speed sensor which is a fancy name for vehicle speed sensor.

You're on the right track. Get that part number for your vehicle it is correct I actually just checked that number you posted in my system and it is correct for some 1996s. (also lists it as a "vehicle speed sensor" on my end lol) people like fancy names.

Glad you got it figured out.

I drove down to Toyota of Dallas to exchange the sensor for the correct one (with the fancy name). Toyota of Dallas (toyotapartsales.com) was awesome. They refunded me the shipping $12 because I had to come in and exchange the part for the correct one (they are supposed to verify the part you order against the VIN you supply).

Anyway, I got home and put the sensor in, in all of about a minute. Drove it around the block a few times, and then again to work today and so far so good, no CEL. Thanks Kyle for all of your help!
