Cold Start Whistling/Squeeking/Chirping

Hi all,

I have a 2000 SR5 4x4 with 53,000 miles on it.

This morning when I started the truck there was a pretty loud whistling sound coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. It increased as the revs increased, and stopped at about 3000 RPMs, but came back when the truck returned to idle. It dissipates as the truck warms up into an almost undetectable constant speed chirping that again sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine bay.

The fan clutch is working properly, and not leaking. The pulleys are all tight on the p/s pump, alternator, crank pulleys, and fan pulley. The drive belts are tight and appear as new.

What else should I be checking out.

I've read all the whistling threads here, and haven't found one that seems similar to mine.

10 bucks says its a timing belt idler. When cold there's less clearance, once warm things open up ever so slightly and won't make as much noise.

If this is the problem, how urgent is it that I fix this?

I was planning on having the timing belt/WP done in January regardless of this little problem.

Try taking off your belts one by one until the squeak goes away. Turns out my timing belt is squeaking. I applied some belt dressing directly to the timing belt with the engine running and a heavy dose of Dupont Teflon lube to the pulleys. Nob squeak this morning but who knows how long it will last.

yes. it can wait. This is a not interference motor so, if it locks up you will just end up stranded. It is not a certainty that that is the problem though.

get some belt dressing and you're favorite lubricant and go try to narrow it down. Spray one belt/bearing/indler/tensioner what have you until you find it.

good luck to you
