Colorado Emissions Testing

I'm selling my 4runner to another family member who lives in Boulder. The muffler has a crack all along the seam. Not throwing any codes. Anyone know much about emission testing out in Colorado? Think it will pass/fail? I really don't want to replace the muffler as I have already dropped a ton of cash into it because I thought I would be the one driving it for many years to come. Life however threw a nasty curveball. Any info, opinions, whatever would be greatly appreciated.

Emission testing in Co in pretty much a joke and nothing more than a revenue generator. Any vehichle that fails would have to be pretty messed up. First off, only counties with established metro areas require it, including Boulder. If the 4Runner is coming in from out of state, it will require a VIN verification in addition to emmissions test. They do a visual of the engine compartment to make sure no mods, then check engine lights and probe the exhaust while running various speeds/transitions on a dyno. And they would have to test every other year, due at registratiopn renewal.
So you would probably pass with a muffler crack, unless it is loud. I would have that repaired anyway due to leaking gasses under chassis. Check out: Air Care Colorado :: Home for details.

BUrt is dead on. crack in the muffler should pass with flying colors. I had a civic with no catalytic convertor-passed with flying colors.all you have to lose is $25 for emission test. Btw it`s seller responsibility to provide emission test.

Like they said, the CO testing is a joke. I'm sure you will be fine. All three of our cars were due this year and all passed. You wouldn't believe some of the cars I see go through and pass. I would say as long as its not creating a super loud sound cause of the crack, you should be fine.

Must not be a family member you like! Do they know about the damage? If so, I would not worry either way as they are buying it knowing it would possibly need a new muffler. In any case, it should pass. The inspections these days are all done by computers...computers hooked to computers. If if yours says all is 'ok' then it should be fine. There was a day they hooked up a hose to the exhaust and tested what came out the 'back end', but that is over.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like it should pass easily. Doesn't make any noise, no codes, mpg are normal.

Westwind....yes I do like all my family members . I've just put so much money into this 4runner. I even replaced the radiator, ball joints, all fluids, etc after we agreed to the sale. Muffler is $400 I'd rather have to put into the new vehicle I haven't even seen yet.

Mine failed cause of the NOx... That was on a cold engine though. I went back the next day and barely passed. Not sure what is causing it to be so high.
