Its a shame the trail is causing such fear. My rig is a daily driver and I know The same is true for Crashman. If you limit yourself to the milkrun lunch trails it really cuts down on the options. Eric has put alot of time and effort into making his rig safe for the trails and is very proud of what he has. You should have heard him worry about scratches when he started, but he is still getting out there. My rig is pretty new and I can say that a scratch or dent is not something I look forward to but that is not going to stop me from pushing myself and my rig. I almost went off a cliff going up to Chinns when I was just trying to go camping ( I was not screwing around with a fully loaded truck and my family onboard). If I had not had both a front/rear winch and the experience to know when to stop and reaccess the situation I could have lost the whole thing. We went camping the next weekend (down at Missouri Gulch) and scouted the same Chinns trail a few weeks later to finally go camping at Chinns last weekend. My point is that we went prepared and got out of a dangerous situation to start with, got back on the horse the next weekend, knew to scout the trail before attaining the goal of finally camping up at Chinns. It was great. While scary at times (My wife had to climb out on the cliff side with one wheel having no purchase) that was not a limiting factor. This trail is rated a 4 to 7. Illinios Gulch is a 4 to 6 which we all did earlier and did fine. If you are not sure, take the diverts (sometimes), go last and watch others, walk the trail and plan your route, do whatever it takes as long as you push yourself. Not past your (real) limits or the trucks but past that comfort zone. If you don't, the only difference between what you have been doing and the mall rigs that look good but never get use is the car wash bill. We all stopped and thought about that first leg at Illinois, some turned back, but for those that continued it was a great day. When you push forward is when you get to see the real wonder of Colorado, your rigs and yourself.
I am not saying this to insult anybody or cause any flames. This is a good bunch of people that I have enjoyed going out with. I just don't want to see you limit yourself when you don't need to.
BTW: Don't let the Jeep guy be the one to have to tell you this. Those Toyota's can do just fine if you let them!

I'm looking to hit some trails Saturday. Not Chinamans. Maybe Georgia pass, glacier ridge, deer creek and such? Kinda by twin cone - but just going the other way. Will have family (wife and 2 kids with me.) Any Interest in that?

hound, i agree with everything you said but right now the only difference between my rig and the grocery getters is a lift and tires. while enough to get me into trouble it really isn't enough to always get me out. my new bumper will arrive next week and a winch will follow shortly after.
but until i get a better equipped vehicle, i'm stuck to the more scenic than challenging trails.
but hell yes...once equipped, bring on the tough stuff. i'm not spending money on my rig to just look pretty in the mall parking lot.

Go with friends (Hi, I'm Hound), watch them, have a recovery point (rear hitch D ring works, not perfect, but works), with a good lift, tires and friends you can take diverts where needed but STILL GO. Experience is the best tool out there and you only get that with practice and use. With others to help you out if you do get into trouble, doing more with less, allows you to know what to do when that winch breaks or something else goes awry (and it will).
BTW: (in order from where you are my recommendation would look something like this) D ring, manual come-a-long, rock sliders ( wanna tick of the wife, kill the B piller and not be able open her door. The General Lee made it look cool but wives are rarely Daisy Duke.). The front bumper and winch are things to get but not required up front to go have fun (thinking of others here if you already have a bumper coming). I would not go alone (you should avoid that anyway, more dangerous and not nearly as fun) with just a lift and tires. Those Toyotas came out looking pretty but are still capable. That is why, after Jeeps, Toys are the next most popular thing you see up in the mountains. It does not take much to get them from grocery getter to King-o-the-mountain :cheers:

Man I am so mad I couldn't go on this would be trip! If I had time off I know I would not have to do much to have hound go with me.
Though my screen name may say different, I am up for a day of wheeling with out damage but I can say sadly my truck has gotten way more damage as a daily driver in the parking lots ( and off ramps ) than on the trail! However the scratch on my front bumper I got on the last trip is the best scratch on the rig, I have a cool story for it, not just "oh that is a door ding" also my local body shop can get most scratches out and wax the outside for about $60-75 and it's new again
I'm not saying to kill your truck and roll it ( or drive it further off a cliff like someone suggested lol ) I am nervous to try a new trail but that's the fun! I say we try a harder trip next time and gain some more experience.
