command start DIY?

Has anyone done a command-start on a 4th gen???

It can't be *that* hard, right? I'm frustrated by the way the companies are 'withholding' information such as wiring diags to create the dependence on the shops for the installs.

Price of the part: $269 Cdn, includes basic install, but requires $80 by-pass module (for security), + give up 1 key + $50 for each feature (door locks, window, etc). and voila the bill is $600 for a part that really should only be about $100-$150.

That gets me thinking. These devices work by sending the required 'pulse' to the correct relay (very generally speaking). Therefore, programming a unit to say "rear window down" should be the same as getting a "rear window up" command. That could really make this a worthwhile project!

Remote starter

A friend of mine installed a remote starter on a Dodge Dakota that I had a few years ago.

I bought the kit at Canadian Tire on sale and he installed it and a CD deck at the same time for $100.

He runs his own business out of his garage selling Pro Start systems. He told me he makes about $20 000/year installing remote starters and stereo systems on weeknights and weekends, mostly starters in the fall. He gave me a deal on mine but he still charges his other customers less than the average shop does.

If you can learn how to do this yourself you could probably set up a small business too and make some good $$.

Especially in Winterpeg! It's gets really cold there and everyone wants to get into a warm car when it's cold.
