@bluewolf: You nailed the issue on the head. The safest way to deal with guns and children is education not secrecy. I too was taught about firearms at a very young age. They were always around the house (unloaded) unlocked and were never really a suprise to me or my siblings. We knew where the ammunition was and knew how to work them. Because of responsible parenting we had the proper persepctive and respect for firearms and thus they were never an issue.
While it is still technically legal to get a concealed weapons permit in CA, in most counties it is a practical impossibility. However, there is no law against carrying a firearm in your vehicle in plain site. It must be unloaded and any ammunition must be in a locked container or physically seperate area of the vehicle from its occupants (i.e. trunk). I'm not sure how this works out if you have an SUV with say your shotgun and shells in the back. F**king Feinstein and Boxster B.S..
BTW, it's interesting to note that both of our illustrious Senators are rumored to possess permits and carry. And they call this freedom! Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
