Confirm parts list - Tundra brake upgrade

Hey everyone,

I priced out ordering parts for the brake upgrade kit locally and was going to be paying over $750 to do the upgrade. This is a bit rich for me.

I checked out AutoZone.com just for the hell of it and it appears I can do it for $428 + taxes. I can then have it shipped to ShipHappens in Oreville and pick it up myself. (Only a 1.5 hour drive each way, might be a nice way to spend an afternoon with the wife.)

So - I've decided I'm going to do this, but would really appreciate some feedback on the parts before I order. Don't want to get there and find out I got something wrong.

I would be hugely grateful if someone could spend a minute and confirm the part numbers will fit on my 1998 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4. In return I will personally thank you, in a PM. lol.

Thanks!!

Yep I have. Just making sure I am not missing anything. Although I just noticed I had selected the 199mm and not the 231mm.

STOP get the 231's!!!!!! Oh you caught it, i just logged on. Brake fluid is a good idea too. Also check out Hawk Pads. I have used them on many vehicles and they GRAB!

I ordered mine from Autozone too. Look around for a coupon code, I found one that for a Labor Day special that got me 15% and free shipping. After returning the cores, the total came in at about $280.

brake pads should come with both sides, so why the quantity of 2?
My understanding is they come with 2 "pads" not 2 "sets of pads" ... am I mistaken?

Edit: I was mistaken. Jeez, I must have been having an off moment when I put this list together. Really glad I made this post instead of just ordering, haha.

Thanks - I will see what I can find. I have to phone in my order though so they may not be open to coupons on the phone.

IMO, just as good. The castings, unless I am mistaken, are OE parts that have been rebuilt.
Okay, thanks... Kind of jumping back and forth between the 199 and 231. I don't want to grind my wheels and the literature (various forum threads) are not clear. Some people's fit, others don't.

obviously you have not read everything in the thread as it is very clear regarding wheels in the thread. sorry if i sound like an ******* but i'm trying to help you out. if you can't take some constructive criticism then you don't belong on this forum.

Finally, Regarding my wheels:

I am running ProComp model 8069's. They are 16x8's and they have 4" backspacing. The equivalent offset is -11mm. These are one of the few aftermarket wheels that are known to fit over the 231mm calipers WITHOUT WHEEL SPACERS! I am trying to avoid spacers on this rig at all costs, so this made me very happy.

Thanks go out to 4-Ripcord for letting me do a test fit with my wheels on his rig before I layed out the cash!!! I know they worked Rip, but I was still a little nervous. Thanks again amigo!

Quote:

I can take constructive criticism all day - no problem at all. However ...

I actually did read the thread. Every page. Every post. (and all the other related posts I could find). If you read my post again you'll see that I did not ask "Will my tires work for ..." I simply said I was jumping back and forth between the two and was worried about a grinding issue. It may sound stupid (in fact it does sound completely stupid, but that's okay), but I am still trying to figure out just exactly which rims I am running - I don't know the difference between some of the rims and don't know if I have the "6 spoke" or the "3 split spoke" rims. They are 16" - I know that - and in some places people say "if you have 16" rims, they fit" and in other places they specify the number of spokes. Not only that - but half the damn threads on the subject are so old that the images are no longer viewable - so its difficult to compare. Also, some of the posts don't even show the rims themselves, just the steps to complete the mod.

Having run websites similar for over 15 years I know how f**king frustrating it is when someone asks questions that are already answered. So I didn't ask the damn question ... in fact I have a print-out right here of all the dimensions from BigFishAllDays original post and I was working on doing some measurements to figure it out for myself.

You have 650+ posts, have been active for 4 years and probably know your truck inside and out and could answer any questions about it without a hesitation. We are all not like you. Have some patience. If you want to help grow a community like this, then try actually being "constructive" yourself instead of making rude comments like "if you can't take some constructive criticism then you don't belong on this forum."

Next time read and understand the post your replying to and don't just assume the person is an idiot, a liar, or is lazy. I am none of those.

Let me help clear this up..."6 spoke" and "3 split spoke" refer to the same wheel style. Why 2 names?, it depends on how you look at the wheel. If yours is a '98 SR5 model, odds are they're 3 splits.

Chill out man. Leave the rage at the gym.
BTW, the wheel fitment issue is NOT very clear. I've seen 3 splits mounted on 231s without grinding.

You're attitude needs a bit of readjusting as well, since you seem to have skimmed this thread and ignored some key points which led you to rage for no reason and make yourself look silly.

Trust me, some of the references the guys around here use take research in and of itself. The 6/3 spoke thing is very easy to get confused about when you are new and trying to make sure you do things right.

We're a helpful community, let's try to keep it that way please.

You came here asking for help right? you said you don't know what wheels you have correct? it could have been easily solved by doing a Search. Wow right? it was so hard right? type in the search column 6 spoke 3rd gen wheels or 3 split spoke wheels. it would have helped.as far as this online stuff its easy to get all bet out of shape for someones reply's like mine as they show no emotion.

My post count doesn't matter, nor do my contributions at this time since I've only had my truck and been a member for a matter of months and am still learning. Not sure what name calling I did though, I think you have me confused with someone else.

On your topic though, I've done the searches that you mentioned, it was a nightmare to sift through the results and the majority were useless. Sometimes it's easier, and quicker to just ask, especially when you have other vague things you're looking to confirm as well, just like the OP did.

When you're looking to spend a bit of cash on something you're not 100% on it's just to ask and be reassured, from others that have done the process before, that you are on the right track.

You mention taking posts out of context due to the text only format we exist in, remember to apply that to yourself as well when you're reading other peoples post. Sometimes they might be at wits end and extremely frustrated and only want to open a dialog with others. When you have questions, sometimes flipping things around from other peoples posts and making it apply to your own unique situation is difficult, so bringing it into your own context helps connect the dots.

Another context issue, the OP even said that he had read the literature you linked, and went so far as to get reminded to grab the 231mm units. Another example that sometimes we just need an outside opinion before dropping the money down. Nothings more disappointing that clicking "buy" and getting the wrong stuff 2 weeks later!

I apologize if I called you out, but I can't stand this "search before asking anger" BS when it's a thread that has not popped up more than 5-10 times in the last few months.

FYI, if you're going to order brake pads from AutoZone, don't go with the Duralast Gold CMAX. I used to work for AutoZone while I was in college and they're crap. All the professional mechanics that came into the store used the Duralast Gold pads if the customer wanted quality pads. I thought I knew better and put a set of CMAX on my girlfirend's Jeep Cherokee. When driving down the mountain those things would get hot and fade like hell. I took them off and exchanged them for the Duralast Gold and the problem went away.

Good to know - thanks. I've decided to spend the extra money and get the parts locally, so if something doesn't work out I can at least easily exchange them rather than shipping/waiting/etc ...

Thanks for every ones time though - I do appreciate it. Unfortunately I'm still not perfectly clear. From my measuring it seems they'll fit, but then I asked a local 4Runner guy who did it as well and he said his didn't fit. So who the f*** knows, lol. I'll just buy em locally and if they don't fit, swap em.
