Considering purchasing a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

NOOOOOOO!!! Jeeps are wicked cool, but the reliability is sub par. I had a 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.7L Limited and put as much into repairs as I paid for it. It was clean and well maintained by the original owner, and had a spotless maintenance record.

Just my experience though! It did have great power and could get out of some sticky situations pretty damn easy.

I had a 2004 Jeep Liberty that I owned for 7 years with not one issue until I hit year 7 But, those have hardly any computerized parts as compared to the 2014 JGC. When I was sitting in the office at the Jeep Dealership, and the guy was selling me warranties he said, "A computer in one of these JGC, even if one tiny one fails, it could cost you 3-4k $." I immediately felt as though I made a bad decision. I even asked him, "Why the heck am I buying a JGC then??" Him: "Well, that's just the way cars are going nowadays - they're completely computer parts."

Which I do agree with that somewhat, but I still feel as though Toyota's don't have the same amount of issues. Also, I looked at the recalls for 2014 JGC's and it was astronomically high! Bah! I hope something comes of all this and I can get into a 4runner sooner than later.

Jeeps are pretty though, I give them that!

I used that and a tad cash to buy it so I wouldn't go upside down. 3 weeks ago I traded that crap back in for a 2016 4Runner since I was upside down I was lucky enough to have value to put into the 4Runner. I bought the jgc limited for almost 40k and a year later it was worth 27 my god

Holy crap!! That's terrible. I know cars depreciate but damn... That's insane. I'm in the same boat as you! Though, I will be quite flipped in my next loan. I'm like you though, I want to sell this and get my Toyota as fast as I can before the value continues to decrease and, hopefully not but you never know, things continue to break.

I just went through the same situation....I was upside down in a 2015 Durango. I sent the Durango down the road after some warranty(lost a fuel pump at 18,000 miles....) issues and some research. I figured(maybe not the best move) if I was going to be upside down in a ride 1. it should be in something I want to drive and 2. it should be in something that "should" hold up better than the Durango. Btw, I purchased a 2016 Trail and am very happy with it!

We also owned a 2015 JGC Altitude Edition during our time away from 4Rs. It was all black with oem 20s and I put some KO2s on it and HIDs in the projectors. It looked badass when clean. I thought it was quite fun to drive, was great in snow, and had a lot of nice features. However i hated the spring-loaded shifter and ill be happy to never hear the words "pulse width modulation" again. Truth be told, it rode like a car and thats probably why i had fun in it. They also seem to pump some engine sound into the interior that makes it sound good. It was my wifes car though and she didn't like it because it felt like a car. She also didnt trust it after the smart start blew a fuse and she couldnt get it started without calling me. Soon after she stole my Wrangler, we sold the JGC, and are now 4R bound once again.

I drove my brothers wk2 from San Jose to Reno once and describe its driving characteristics as anxious. It's better since we installed some OME suspension but it's still not as stable feeling as the 4Runner imo. Combined with the blind spots and I felt very unsafe behind the wheel.

Where do you get the clearbra installed? Also, I'm looking at a Limited just because I really like the styling of the front end but also love the wheels that come standard on them. Any suggestions or comments about the differences in the models of the 4runner? This will be my first one (I'm super excited).

I don't know a ton about them but I'm learning. You guys are definitely on the ball and have loads of info. I appreciate it!

I full agree with this. I'm going to be going to a few Toyota dealerships around here looking at their used 2014 4runners. I don't know much about the differences in the models but I'm sure they're all great.

Love our TEP. My wife wanted a sunroof and headed seats. I wanted the rear locker and kdss another driving a SR5 base without it.


So a win/win. However, if the limited would have had the same grill and not the IMHO ugly wheels, it would have won due to the tech she liked in her Camry. Smart key, real leather, auto climate are things she missed and loved. She's over it but I heard it for a bit!


BTW! The trail is now called TRD offroad.

Wife wanted a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

So, I told her my story of my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD 4x4 and the "fun" torque converter that would lock up and kill the engine, and she remembered all the issues her ex-husband had with his Wrangler...

I wanted her to test drive the Cherokee still. Then I took her to drive a Mazda CX5 2.5L AWD and a Subaru Forester XT (Turbo and AWD of course). Her take away was the Grand Cherokee had the nicest interior, the CX5 looked the coolest on the exterior, and the Forester XT was by far the easiest and most fun to drive with the most comfortable seats.

She has 45,000 miles on her 2014 Forester XT. She loves it, and we haven't had any issues with it (knock on wood). We still drive my 4Runner most places because of the ride height and the fact that I am afraid of getting a ticket in her Forester XT.

My advice - don't limit yourself. Drive them all. Read all the reviews. Get what you like. I know we are happy with our final choices.

FWIW - a JGC doesn't really match up well to a 4runner, so it's hard to compare the two. A Toyota Highlander is a lot closer in form to a JGC than a 4runner - both being unibody crossovers. It's basically comparing a car with big tires (JGC) to a truck with extra seats (4Runner). So you have to accept all of the limitations of having a truck with extra seats.

Limited has Xreas suspension -

Trail has the option of KDSS

Xreas and KDSS are very different systems. They could be used together, but they are not offered on the same vehicle. Xreas is shocks. KDSS is sway bar hydraulic action.

The rest (trail w/o KDSS, SR5, TRD Pro) have normal sway bars and passive shocks. TRD Pro's have larger shocks that are basically bilstien 6110 without the adjustable height.

Trail editions and TRD Pro will have rear e-lockers, crawl control, and multi terrain select.

As far as highway diving - for me KDSS in a trail edition was the best of the group. I would have bought a limited if it had KDSS.

The Trail or SR5 models do NOT have auto headlights. Why? I have no idea. Drives me nuts because the navigation screen doesn't automatically adjust to night mode. I also would like the smart key from the Limited.

Finally - there will be a new model for 2018, so if you don't mind waiting a little bit you should get a good idea of what the 2018 will be by about June of this year. If I were buying right now - I'd probably wait until the 2018 model details were available to know if it had something I really wanted to wait for.

Jeep experiences

Have really enjoyed reading through this thread about the Jeep experiences.
Some posts have made me laugh , some have had me almost crying from the bad encounters people have had. I learned a long time ago I desired a good reliable vehicle to get me back & forth to work without constant reliability drama.
When I first got my license I drove my moms '80 Corolla , 2 door , 5spd , RWD quite often . The abuse and thrashing I subjected that car to, was amazed it stayed running. So my first Toyota was a '86 short bed, std cab, 5spd 4wd with the 22r carbureted. A great, extremely reliable vehicle . Have bought nothing but Toyotas ever since.
In the early '90's I worked some construction at a Jeep plant up in Toledo, they made the CJ I think they were called . Just the 2 door soft top basic jeep. After seeing how they were put together & the design of various parts used to build them , from bare frame to driving them out the door I knew I'd never consider a Jeep product. Would never consider buying a domestic vehicle and of the domestics I've always thought of Chrysler/Jeep being the low man on the totem pole.

Thanks so much for your reply!! I hopped over to Toyota today. It looks like I will be 7k in the hole on my jeep trade in. Sigh. It's my own fault. The only way I can get out of it right now is if I lease a highlander for 3 years, then start clean and get a 4 runner after the lease is up. I feel sick. Haha.

I as far as the Limited goes, I do like the grill on the Limited better than the sr5. But I guess I don't need to worry about that for a few years now
