2024 Grand Highlander

It's something of a running joke here that us Limited drivers should have just purchased a Highlander. Obviously, there are a plethora of reasons why the two aren't directly comparable and specific "features" only available to the 4runner. However, i didn't post this to go down that rabbit hole, but rather in interest of keeping the hate alive . Check out the upcoming Grand Highlander.

Most notable to me is the 2.4L I4 Turbo Hybrid and it's 362 HP, 400 Ft-Lbs, 5000 Lbs Tow Rating in a vehicle that probably has a similar curb weight as the 4runner. I think this is the same engine architecture available on the Crown. This may just be what the 6th gen receives.

My personal preference is a good value for my intended use. There’s a place for a T4R Limited and the Grand Highlander. Obviously the market is bearing it for now, justifying Toyota’s continued manufacture.

For my value / intended use, my ‘18 SR5 fits my preference. It’s worked perfectly for my real world use. Best of all, it’s paid for.

Back in the day I had a Tacoma TRD until I got my T4R. If I was two decades younger again I’d have a T4R TRD Premium, to me the best overall value of the 4Runner lineup. A substantial percentage of my driving is dirt and two track, snow and ice; my SR5 hasn’t left me wanting.

The GA-K platform version of the hybrid is a lot different from what would go in a GA-F model. The GA-F version is between the engine and trans and adds roughly 40hp/100tq. So at best I would guess the MAX hyrbrid T24A would be 315hp, 400ft/lbs. But remember that the extra power is for ~60 seconds. So maybe 1 second 0-60, but no real benefit on Mountain passes or towing. But 275/300 would probably still be a better than the current 1GR because it'll be a lot more power at 2k rpms.

Unfortunately it's 2cyl short of being market competitive.

I have a friend in search of a new Limited Runner right now. He’s going to drive it like a car though so I suggested the Highlander or RX. They are the better vehicle for car use but he wants the extra IG likes so he’s going for the Runner Limited.

starting price though is around $50K, that's USD. I'd rather buy a used 5.7 sequoia for half the price maybe even less than that. Idk, new vehicles are just getting too expensive for my taste

The Grand Highlander certainly has my attention and may be something we look at in a few years. I'm 35 with two kids and a dog and space is important. We didn't jump on a normal Highlander because of the overall size and we ended on a VW Atlas. We got a great lease price on it too. It was the Atlas or a Traverse with that much room and I HATE Chevy Crossovers. My mother has one and it's awful. The Tahoe or Burban is out of our price range. The Atlas will be paid for in 2 years, so we'll have to see how it's still doing, but will still be under 70k miles by then. I'm not necessarily a VW fan, but I do like the car a lot. It's a great family whip. However, would much rather have a Toyota if it's comparable size now. $50-60k would be a tough pill to swallow though for an "upgrade".

Wouldn't the Grand Highlander fit better in a discussion as to whether a Sequoia buyer should spend significantly more money on fixed rear axle truck-based platform that has compromised interior space unless they need a tow vehicle? It's bigger than a 4Runner no?

Well Runners in general are IG material now. You can't be seen in something like a Highlander because you will lose followers.

He rode in mine and thinks it's this massive vehicle perfect for 3 row duties. The headroom tricks people into thinking the Runner is larger than it really is.

Good point. The Grand Highlander and Crown are transverse engine setup (GA-K). I would expect longitudinal for 4Runner as seen in GA-F Tundra and Sequoia.

I owned a 1st gen pilot for a bit (we called it our post partum pilot) and the new one looks really nice. Savagegeese has a good review of them.

Exterior size is right in the middle. But interior size, the GH is bigger than the Sequoia. It's the biggest SUV in the Toyota lineup by cargo volume. I think it'll take a lot of potential Sequoia sales because of how badly Toyota fumbled the Sequoia design so badly.

I hate the “2 captain’s chairs” second row in all but the base model.

Same with the LX600 which has a literally nonexistent base model.

I kinda agree. Sequoia now is at a very unusual spot. Earlier it was the largest SUV they offered and that attracted certain customers. I don’t know how many of sequoia customers actually care for its body on frame design and off roaring capabilities — you have 4R for that, which is big enough even if you are taking your family off-roading [emoji3]
But now with GH I am not sure what is sequoia’s usp is.
