considering to move to NC

The family is considering to move from williamsburg va to somewhere near raleigh nc. There a few reasons why we want to move, lack of jobs in the area we currently live in is the main factor. The cost of living is in williamsburg is crazy high, the oppurtunities for young children seem to be harder and harder to find, the wife and i have lived here our entire life and feel like weve used up are job oppurtunites and feel that our son could benefit more by moving out of the area. Weve researched jobs in the raleigh area and were impressed by what is available as compared to williamsburg. Ive looked at houses in the Fuquay Varina area and Angier. Im posting this wondering if anyone here has any advice as to where I should do more research on. Im looking to live in a nice area with a decent size house and lot size. My son is going into the 8 grade and is a straight A student, so a good school district is important. He also plays sports year round and hopes to go thru college on a football scholarship. The wife and I hope to live close enough to raleigh to commute to work. My type of work is more beneficial in more populated areas such as a city like raleigh. Please anyone that knows the area comment on this post and let me know the pros and cons of the area. Also feel free to ask me any questions about the situation. I was born and raised in Raleigh (north hills) and loved it. It has become quite a big city now. Why not live in Raleigh? I understand prices are cheaper outside but it's worth it to not sit in traffic everyday to get in and out.

Just last night there was another reason added to my list of why we want to move. This reason goes straight to the top, my 4runner got broken into, well they didnt break any glass, but they did rob me of all the goodies i had in it. My ipod got stolen, iphone charger stolen, and to top it all off my extra truck keys with the fob got stolen. I know I totally asked for this by leaving my car unlocked, and by leaving the keys in it all the time, but this one forgetful night screwed me big time. I forgot to lock the truck, I always leave the ignition key and fob in the truck and lock it with the extra fob i have in my pocket, but this on time i forgot and the kids of the "hood" got me. If it was anybody that knew how to drive my truck would have been stolen, now i cant leave it parked at the house cause they could come back at anytime to get it. We are determined to move now more than ever.

We would like to live outside raleigh just to get away from the hustle and bustle a city creates. We want to have some space and a sense of security that the country offers. Id like to have at least 1.5 to 5 acres somewhere. We dont neccasarily have to work in the heart of the city but somewhere close enough that gets a high volume of work. Weve havent been to raleigh so im not sure how big of a city it is and to what extent the rush hour traffic jams would be. Do you have any suggestions on where to live outside of raleigh? Rural areas? I work as a painter in the auto collision industry thats why i was implying about working close to the city.

That sucks. Odd that you mentioned it, because the only place I've ever had a vehicle broken into was when I lived in Williamsburg! This was in 93 when I was going to school there. I rented a room in a house right off Lake Matoaka.

Some moron tried to steal the windshield out of my 1991 Toyota PU. Pried the chrome strip off until he either got bored or realized it wouldn't work, then left. I had to pay Toyota $150 (in 1993 dollars) to replace it.

There is no shortage of collision centers, or collisions here thats for sure. Used to live in north Raleigh, now in Garner, there are a few of us T4R members here. "Dous" lives in west Ral, I am on the eastern edge of it. As mentioned, the commute can be a bear, but not as bad or any worse than any metropolitan on any given day. We'll try to help you with any local info we can.

Raleigh is a great place to live. That's where I am now. Not sure what you do, but my dad had to move out of state to find work. He's in software development though. Some of the technology jobs are still not back in Raleigh.

Gonna be nice even though my coffee aint kicked in yet.... A collision center is where they do paint and body work to restore the car/truck to its original shape and beauty. They make those that cant drive look like they can, and those that got crunched look even better... Places like True2Form, Mini City Auto Body, Coats Paint & Body, Paragon Collision... Get the idea now ....

I would advise contacting these places, if you need a cheat sheet, the YP app is your best friend. Plus, I am pretty sure us locals can toss some names in the hat as well.

Ive been looking closely at Garner. The houses are amazing looking, the town reviews are just what were looking for, friendly people willing to help and look after one another. Thanks for posting the names of the local shops. Are there any news specific apps for the area, i like to keep up with the news. I have the wral news 5 app, i hardly ever see bad news on it.

I have moved many, many times and have bought homes in many different states. I highly recommend calling the local police dept in the city you want to live. Ask them for a "crime grid" of that area. It is a complete breakdown of EVERY crime that has taken place in that area for the period of time you requested. I usually ask for the past 2 years. You will likely see the usual assault, robbery, domestic disturbance, etc...the biggest thing I generally talk to them about is:

strong arm robberies vs use of a firearm/weapon
home invasions
and the obvious rape and murder stats

There is wral5 which you have, I think but not certain that both nbc17 & the Raleigh News & Observer have apps as well. Mainly I use the 5 for weather and news highlights.
