Contemplating 2nd Gen 4Runner

So, I've always wanted a 3rd Gen 4Runner with manual transmission. Unfortunately, my wife can't drive manual and I prefer driving manual. We ended up getting a new 2009 Rav4. I really really like the higher seating position I get from the Rav4 and still really want to pursue my dream of getting a manual 4Runner (more so now that I've experienced driving a higher vehicle).

The question is, since I can only afford a 2nd gen now instead of the 3rd gen, I was wondering what you guys would suggest. I know alot about the 3rd gens as I was dead set on getting one, but I know next to nothing about the 2nd gens.

Should I get a 4-cylinder or V6? Do they use timing belts or chains? What are some things I should look for when looking for a used 2nd gen? Lastly, I heard that the 4WD can't be used on regular roads. Does that mean I can't/shouldn't put it into 4WD until I feel the wheels slipping? The reason I like the 4WD is to have it on full time when I'm driving in snow or slippery conditions.

Thanks

The 3.0 had a lot of head gasket issues and over heating. The 22RE that was in the 1st and 2nd gens is very reliable and with a few mods can easily put out as much power as the 3.0 V6 however the V6 does have better torque numbers. As far as driving with it in 4wd in snow you are in a limited traction situation so should not be a problem. That warning is mainly for dry high traction situations.

Thanks. I think I'll look for the 4 cylinder version then. I don't need a pocket rocket and I won't be towing so I don't really need the torque. I'm more for a cheap, reliable vehicle. Does the 4-cyl have the timing chain like the 3rd gen ones?

Thanks

The 3.0 is actually a very good motor as long as you shift at 3 grand or under....I'm on my 4th 2nd gen they have all been the 3.0 and they are just really strong running
