Control Arm Bushings in bad shape!

Rear Control Arm Bushings in bad shape!

I got underneath my truck today and notice that my u/l control arm bushings are in rough shape, can the bushings be replace? If yes where can i get new bushings or do i have to get new control arms?

I looked into this a while back for my first Runner..

I want to say you cant get the 4wd uca bushings OEM, but you can go aftermarket OR replace the entire arm assembly with an OEM arm.

You surely can replace just the lower bushings, and I suggest to go for OEM stuff all the way too for the ultimate quality and longevity!!

And the lower bushing part numbers:

2x 48061-35040
2x 48061-35050

Well that would have been helpful...:shrug:

The lower control arm bushings can be replaced. The entire uppers have to be replaced.

BUSH SUB-ASSY, LOWER CONTROL ARM 48702-35070 4 1997.08- RZN18#, VZN18# $27.23

ARM ASSY, UPPER CONTROL 48710-35040 2 1995.11- RZN185, VZN185 $112.01

There may be aftermarket options, I'm not sure.
I would probably find some good used ones. There's quite a few on Ebay.

There are lots of aftermarket options available including extended and beefier ones if your lifted, etc. I would look into it. If your not worried about it just have an auto parts store do the press work on the lowers and pick n pull the uppers or see about someone on the forum who is parting one out.

Not all 3rd gens have replaceable bushing in the lower control arm (you don't say what year yours is...)
My 96's captive bushings (top) compared to the '02's replaceable version (bottom):

I got a junkyard set of lower control arms out of a low mileage 02 that had bushings in good shape. Will drive on them until they wear out and be able to replace them when needed.
 
I see youre in NY state. If that sleeve is at all rusty, you will have a great time trying to press out the old bushing. For me, it took every bit of pressure my 12 ton press could put out along with a lot of heat and penetrant on the sleeve.

There are aftermarket Roca complete arm assemblies on Amazon, which would likely be a better option. I don't know how good the bushings are that they use, but its worth a shot. Have a ratchet strap handy for when you try to realign the frame side bolt holes and the axle side holes. I had to pull my axle toward the rear to line everything up.

What makes you think the captive ones aren't replaceable?

Check out [MENTION=97483]Chuckles89[/MENTION] build thread. He did replace his. I should have said they are captive in the manner of the upper dog bones and therefore not readily replaceable, I guess. Come to think of it he may have replaced the upper rear control arm bushings as well. I remember being impressed with what he did, but not all the details.

The uppers were super easy with the press.

The lowers had to have the metal sleeve cut out without damaging the arm. I used a hand saw with a carbide saw-zall blade in it.

Do these bushings squeak or require constant greasing to prevent it?

They didn't squeak for about three months, but then I started driving through deep water a lot at our local offroading place. I did spray some graphite dry lube in there and it has held up for over a month so far (with water crossings).

Yeah they're a little rusty, i might have to replace the arms, thanks a lot bud :thumb3:
