coolant changed color

I changed my radiator about 4 1/2 years ago and used Toyota red coolant.

Took a look tonight and it is blue. Maybe purple-ish blue.


Does red change color with age? Truck seems to be running fine.

I don't think I've ever read Toyo Red changing color with age and certainly not blue!

Maybe something was in the water mixed in with the Red?

Still, not too expensive to drain/fill, eh? :cowboy:

Did you remove the rad cap and check the rad or just the overfill?
Have you checked it before since replacing the rad?

Are you sure you are not checking the windshield washer bottle by mistake?

You got it!

OP, empty your overflow tank and refill to the line with coolant. Windshield wiper fluid won't be good to get in the engine (soap suds), especially if it's the cold weather kind that has methanol in it. That's like mixing race fuel in your coolant.

I've had to tell Jiffy Lube to NOT touch my coolant before while they were doing a state inspection.

Them: "Your overflow tank is couple inches low, we'll top it off for you for
free!."

Me: "Hell no you won't! You won't use Toyo Red, just your Prestone green,
which don't mix. I monitor my temperatures and and they are just
fine. Not to mention you have signs all over the waiting room stating
that you aren't responsible for damage that may occur while
you're working on my car. Inspection and nothing else!"


Well that's how it went in my head. I really just said, "No, thank you, I'll take care of it".

When I was 17, I filled the coolant reservoir on my Volvo 240 with window washer fluid and drove like that for a couple days. Pretty embarrassing, but it didn't seem to damage the engine at all.

You're going to have to try a lot harder than that if you want to damage a red block!

Haha....jk. I did some pretty stupid stuff with cars myself too before I started getting interested in learning how to work on them myself.

Until I got the 5VZ-FE, I drove nothing but red blocks. We got an XJ last summer, so I've been learning my way around the 4.0 as well, though technically it's my girl's car.

When I was young I put antifreeze coolant in the window washer reservoir. My windshield sure was streaky.

Never owned a Jeep, but I've heard the 4.0 is pretty durable too.
