Coolant issue

i'll try replacing the cap.
basically I have experienced where the car started over heating. when I let it cool the reservoir tank was full of coolant and the radiator itself was fairly empty. This has happened on two occasions.
Today when I got home from work it started over heating again.. (only starts to overheat if I am at idle) after I let it cool. The resevoir tank was full but this time the radiator was full also.

everything looks normal.
The coolant is transparent green.
The oil looks like oil. No water or coolant when checking the dipstick. Doesn't look milky white..
I don't think i am burning up coolant cause the white smoke only happens when I first start the car after a long rest.

everything seems to be good for now.. Hopefully it will last. only thing is now that I don't get heat not unless I am moving. Basically when it sits at idle the heat turns into ambient air. once I step on the gas and get going the heat comes back.
Do I have poor circulation or a clog somewhere?

had this happen yesterday. my butt got a 13lb cap, hmmm.... 13lbs that will equaliate to 39 degrees over 212 to the water to boil (3 degrees per lb.) well yeah, that was not letting my system circulate up to par and over heated, so I got a 8lb and it worked today intell I blew a coolant line I had plugged, then blew the upper radiator hose later. yeah stranded two times one day!

I think of the rad cap as a relief valve. If you put a "13lb" cap in it will increase the total maximum pressure (and temp) of the system before it over flows.
The circulation of the system is controlled by the water pump. The thermostat opens at a set temperature to allow the coolant to circulate through the Radiator loop. There's also a valve that you open to allow coolant to flow through the heater core when you crank up the heat.
I think you've got something plugging up or restricting the flow in the main loop of the system that cools the engine. Instead of circulating the fluid the water pump is just pressurizing the system.
This could explain why you're blowing hoses left and right.
Maybe you should get one of those coolant flush kits and try flushing the system.

I can't remember what was wrong with my 87 4Runner a few years back, but it was doing something similar. I can remember hearing like a waterfall type noise coming from my radiator. I can't remember if it was the same time I had a bad head gasket or not, but I remember fixing the head gasket, then put in a new radiator like a week later. The problem was fixed after that. I,m trying hard to remember because my truck is starting to make the same "waterfall" noise and my heater doesn't work anymore, I also go through coolant but not super fast... Maybe you just have a clogged radiator = bad radiator???
Put a new cap on (13lbs) but it overheats when I use the heater.. There is a bad gurgling noise when I accelerate, but only when I have the heat on. Also overheats in stop and go traffic, again only when the heat is on. And when I stop the car and let it cool down the fill the coolant reservoir to the top leaving my radiator empty, once again only when the heater is left on hot.
If I put on cool (no heat from the heater) I don't overheat. I do not get a gurgling sound. (already tried bleeding the air out) and I still have coolant in the radiator..
I am gonna try to replace the hoses near the heater valve and the inlet and try to replace the thermostat.
But could this be also a bad fan clutch?
