Coolant leak at WP - oil cooler hose

Just got finished my TB/WP/VCG and all associated parts. Had the truck running for maybe 3 hours and it appears there is a coolant leak at the hose coming off the water pump ( at the stat ). I believe it is P/N 15777A.

I cant even really see where this hose goes and if it is a replaceable part. Kind of pissed that I need to tear everything apart again.

Has anyone replaced this hose?

How big is your leak? Curious to know how difficult this hose is to replace. Mine had minor weeping at the connection, so I just added another clamp next to the existing spring clamp which has fixed the weeping. I plan on replacing the hose the next time I do a coolant drain.

Also, if you're going to replace this hose there is also another U shaped hose in there for the oil cooler which makes sense to replace too.

Yes, there are two hoses that go to the oil cooler. One long one that connects to the oil cooler and water pump, and one short "U" shaped one that connects to the oil cooler and block. Everyone said they are a pain to get to and change, but I just did mine and the worst part is draining the coolant because it always seems to go everywhere but where you want it to go... Replacing the hoses only took a few minutes.

All you need is a couple different pliers so you can figure out which one works best for each hose clamp. Then pull the hoses off, slide the new ones on and put the hose clamps back on. While you are in there you may want to consider replacing the O ring that goes between the block and oil cooler and "washer seal" that goes between the oil cooler and bolt that holds it onto the block. They can leak (oil) as they get hard and old.

I just did this job as I had a very slight oil leak from the oil cooler, but I also changed out those oil cooler hoses while I was in there.

The best way to get to the oil cooler is through the driver side wheel well. It's the big round thing towards the back of the block.

Oil cooler hoses part numbers are:
Short "U" shaped on: 15777-62020
Long one that goes to WP: 15778-62030
O ring for oil cooler: 90301-67004
washer seal for bolt to oil cooler: 90210-22001

Check these part numbers before you order just to be safe!

Ok thanks for the info. Im more pissed that the entire truck is back together. I dont want to have to remove everything all over again.

I think if I unbolt the oil dipstick from the WP neck, i should be able to get to that clamp. Cant even see where the other end goes to.

The leak is large enough for me. Ran the truck for 3 hours, no issues. Drove it around the block and when I came back it was leaking.

Don't even need to take the dipstick out, just work the pliers so the two handles are between the upper alternator belt. I used a medium sized pair of channel locks for that one. When you take off the driver side front wheel. There's a little splash shield there that blocks the view of the oil cooler. Take that off, and you'll see the oil cooler and other end of that hose. You will most likely have to break the clips holding that piece on if they are the OEM ones. I replaced mine with some from autozone that you can get out without breaking...

Thanks for the advice. Are the hoses, washer, o-ring all serviceable through the driver's wheel well? Other than taking the wheel off, does anything else need to come off?

These hoses have custom bends and tight turn radiuses. If you use a normal hose with the U shaped hose you risk collapsing the hose and cutting off the flow.

When I did this I did the whole replacement of the Oring, bonded washer, and 2 hoses through the wheel well. Disconnect hoses from the block and WP and take the bolt out. Take it out and note the hose position. Put the new hoses on in noted position and feed it back in. I can't remember if the large oring fits tightly in the oil cooler (I think it doesn't) Use some grease to hold it in the groove. Even then be careful it doesn't come out when you snug up the cooler.

Hey man thanks a lot! Ive been trying to make friends with anyone in Northern NY so I can go pick up parts from them haha.

I ended up going to an Auto Parts store today and grabbing a chunk of 1/2" heater hose and 2 gear clamps. Cost me $4.

I did a test fit first and I determined I could remove the old hose ( from the WP to the oil cooler ) and replace it with my new piece. It was not super easy, but it worked. Was able to make a nice bend radius with no kinks. No leaks as of yet.

Just did my hoses and oil cooler gaskets today. WOW what a huge pain the arse it is to get those hose clamps off! It's all accessible via the driver's side wheel well, but still extremely difficult. What really saved me was the specialty locking hose clamp pliers I got off eBay. I would NOT want to attempt this job with standard pliers!

Also, I highly recommend going the extra step and replacing the oil cooler gaskets. After 20 years of heat, the factory O-ring is guaranteed to be shot. Mine was hard/brittle and broke apart as soon as the cooler was removed.

Oil Cooler

So I removed the oil cooler and the upper pipe/tube that connects with the smaller u-shaped rubber hose to the engine was full of orange/brown sludge and so is the pipe coming from the engine. I was able to clean out the oil cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air, but what is the best way to clean/clear out the pipe/tube coming from the engine? Pour distilled water down the radiator and hopefully it cleans it out? Any help is appreciated.

tagging this as I need to do this, don't want to, but preventative as I have to do other work in that area ( install a block heater, moving to Alaska) and need to drain the cooling system and do an oil change so might as well.
