Coolant service questions

I have an 07 4runner and have already performed the 100k coolant service at my local shop. I want to do the 150k service myself to save some $. Does anyone know the procedure Toyota recommends for the coolant maintenance? Is it sufficient to just drain the radiator and refill or do you also need to empty out the engine block?

It is SUPER easy to do... I basically had the same situation as you and did the 150 change myself. I drained the block - it wasnt too much added effort and I wanted to get as much old coolant out as possible. Replaced with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant as spec'd.

I have the 2UZ-FE, so I only saved the FSM sections for it... see attached for the pages for this (basically the same as the 1GR-FE version Bossman posted).

Do you remember what the size of the hose was that you used to drain the block? Trying to figure out what the ID needs to be for the block drain valves for the V8.

I think I remember using 3/8” clear tubing.

I ended up buying like a couple of feet of a couple diff ID sizes cause I didnt know before hand and I cannot recall the one that worked best... but this sounds about right:

Thanks for this, I will use it too. What are you guys doing with the used coolant? Searched online and got everything from take it to Jiffy Lube to poor it down the drain.

Also, where is the heater water plug referred to in the procedure?

I didn’t use the heater water plug. I drained radiator and engine block. Re-filled everything with distilled water and Prestone chemical coolant flush. Ran engine for 10-15 mins with heater on full blast. Turn engine off, let cool. To back flush the heater core I just gave the upper radiator hose a bunch of really good quick squeezes. Run engine again with heater on full blast. Turn off, let engine cool. Drain everything, then refill with new coolant, topping off reservoir as coolant gets sucked into the system. Once you think it’s full, give the upper hose a few more good quick squeezes to burp, top off if needed. Should be good to go.

What are you guys doing with the used coolant??

In my area, O'Reilley Auto Parts accepts ALL used fluids - Oil/ATF/Power Steering/Brake/Gear Oil/Coolant. If you don't have an O'Reilley in your location, call the other mass marketer auto parts places. I once asked Jiffy Lube if they accepted used oil - they did not. They are franchised operations, so it will vary from JL to JL.

Disposal: if you have a septic, i would find a place to accept it. if you have sewer, i believe you can flush it, if you want. the treatment plant will handle it.

Where I live there is a recycling center attached to the local dump drop off, you can bring in most automotive fluids and dump them for free.
