I pulled my 4runner in the garage last night to get a game plan on how im gonna fix my wiring for my electric fan (replaced the fan i blew up wheeling almost a year ago, it works but im going to improve on it and add a micro controller to control EVERYTHING ive installed.
Anyway i was under the hood and my buddy asked what that extra wire hanging out was (the A/C kick on for the fan which i haven't wired up yet), i went and touched it to the positive terminal which will kick the fan on, no go. so i take everything apart to try and find the problem and in the process i snapped part of the fan blade so no regardless I'm replacing something for sure. I ended up finding out that the fuse had almost popped out and wasn't giving enough current to the fan, that part is now fixed. I was getting voltage at the fan plug just not enough current.
Now l when the fan turns on the part that broke it smacking around which is not good. So the fan needs to be replaced.
I have had some problems in the past where the fan accidentally got shut off from my knee hitting the switch which caused a overheat (caught it quick, wasnt a problem), but the micro controller is going to take all of that out of the equation and i wont have to worry about that again.
Now my next issue is, i dont have a lot of room under the hood to mount relay boxes i have (maybe someone can point me to some sweet low profile, high current (40+amp) relay boxes. If i can over come all of that then im in business, but its alot of work.
Then it crossed my mind, why dont i just got back to the tried and true stock setup, thousands of people run it for hundreds of thousands of miles with no issue at all. The only reason i did the efan was Because i was being cheap and wanted a project.
Cliffs: Efan busted, should i go back to stock setup?
