cooling issues

hey all,

any help wuld be much appreciated. here is the problem...

my 84 4runner with a 2l 2.4 diesel engine keeps pushing coolant from my radiator into the overflow bottle when im driving. and it keeps filling the overflow up thus im losing coolant from my radiator.

since this problem arose i have replaced my radiator cap, clutch fan, thermostat, thermostat housing, coolant change of course, all the hoses have been replaced...

and its still doing it...i have checked pressure and thats normal, no milky oil....and i have no idea why its doing it.

any help as to why my car keeps filling up the overflow would be much appreciated.

Is it running hot? over heating?

are we *SURE* our thermostat isn't in backwards? *

nope not overheating at all. always stays the constant temp just under half. and nope haha have the thermostat right way up my mechanic seemed to think it was the clutch fan. he said because the clutch fan is stuffed its boiling the top ha;lf of the radiator thus boiling over to the overflow. so i changed that and its still doing it. mind you i have been driving it around the city and it stays at the right level and doesnt overflow, but it did it again when i was out 4x4ing. mind you i did get the thing pretty caked up in mud and was giving it a hiding...so dont know if that might have restricted the air flow to the radiator.???? it only seems to do it on long trips!!!

Have you done a compression check?

From what I hear those motors are pretty prone to head gasket failures. It's possible that the HG is allowing higher pressures into the cooling system so even a properly functioning cap could push out coolant.


Just throwing out an idea...

yeah pressure test has been done. all completely been normal.

I know you have a 2.4 Diesel But due to a HG issue on my 22re and of course having a winch I am now going to install the V6 radiator into mine. Perhaps you should look into seeing if the hose lines match up and possibly go that route. Also it may be the water Pump itself. Thats what caused my failure.... And not the fan Clutch. Remember it can spin on the outside but can snap off on the inside.

Good point. Do these water pumps have weep holes to check?*
