Cost and Considerations?

I am thinking about buying another 4runner. Should I get the 2016 or wait for the 2017? Being that it is the end of the year should dealers be willing to go down on the 2016 since they want to get rid of stock? When is a good time to buy?

There was no price reduction in the 2015's when the 2016's rolled out, considering that they were exactly the same..... which is what's happening with the 2017, wild internet speculation aside.

There really is no use in waiting right now. You won't see significant savings.

Best time to buy in my opinion is just before your current vehicle starts costing you a fortune. I missed that date by about 6 months when I bought my 4r.

IMO if you want to buy brand new, might as well wait for the 2017. There will likely not be any difference like everyone said, but if there is you'll be kicking yourself. Also it will have been out of the factory less time than the 2016's thus out of the elements. Might as well wait a few months and get another year higher since it will be the same price.

Aside from demos and pearl LEs, I don't think many sit long on dealer lots.

Really? Toyota has announced there are no differences and the average time on the lot is less than 30 days.

OP the only real advantage is a year newer when it comes time to trade or sell. That's it. No clearance sells, no getting rid of stock, no better deals, nothing. The 4Runner is a high demand vehicle.
 
I've been driving by salivating over a Barcelona red trail for like 2 months sitting out front of my local dealer. Demand is very low in my area

Couldn't have said it better.

I see 2-3 year old 4Runners here in Denver with 40-50K miles regularly going for very close to what they did new. Low mileage ones often go for what they did new. They hold their value very, very well.

I made the deal on mine last week and my salesman customized it by removing port installed options I did not want. So, it is coming exactly how I want at a siginificant discount off MSRP.
 
Some dealers hold their price and vehicles sit. 4runners sell themselves. If you find what you want at the price you want Buy it...... who knows what the future holds on production, transportation etc.

What is your definition of significant and what did you buy?

Dealers here will barter a little bit (and I mean a little) on SR5's and LE's. Trail and TRD? Forget about it. Not happening.
 
You can try the typical end of the month, or end of the year bargaining...but that's about it. As everyone else said, find what you want and if you can get near 5% below MSRP run with it. Best chance is usually a Costco or TrueCar buying program to get a couple dealer quotes to compete against but even with that most dealers will do a take or leave it with such a high demand vehicle.
 
If you can swing the 2017 for the same price as a 2016 than that is what I would do for no other reason that when you go to sell it one day a 2017 might appear more attractive to some than a 2016.

MSRP = $40,724
Sales Price = $37,400

THIS. I got a quote for a trade in on my 4runner today that was just shy of what I paid for it.
