Cost for Cat. converter in California

I may need to be replacing the catalytic converter for my '99 4Runner. I'm at 199,000 and my mechanic says he believes it's the cat that's causing the check engine light to come on.

Since I can't order online (they don't ship to CA. addresses) I have called
local dealerships and their prices range from $960 - 1,008.

Are these prices accurate or am I being overpriced? Any recommendations on who else to call for possible lower prices?

The prices are accurate for the dealership. Not sure what to tell you about shipping to Cali, I know Cali does not like aftermarket cats at all! You may be stuck with the dealer.

EDIT: If you know anyone who lives in a different state, have the cat shipped to them, then have your friend ship it to you. I know the companies selling the aftermarket cats wont ship to any Cali address, but you could get around it this way.

Try Napa auto parts, Amazon, or Ebay: and make sure that they are CARB approved. They range from $140 to $240 (plus tax).

Before replacing your cat, replace the O2 sensor. Usually that does it. Also the California auto repair pass/fail limits for each model change every year. The limits are completely arbitrary. make sure your engine is running right and it can pass with aftermarket cats.

I don't know if the CAT has some sort of I.D. that marks it as CARB certified, but you could pass the exhaust test and fail the visual inspection. F.Y.I.
