Cost of Coilover install vs shocks and coils.

Long story short, what would be the difference of the install price of a toytec 3" lift vs an OME lift.

The toytec is a coilover on the front, and the OME comes seperate.

Also, I was quoted at around $500 for a professional install of my lift kit, which is absurd, considering I only payed about $800 for the thing in the first place. Does anyone know a place with a hoist that I can get this installed cheaper, or can anyone do this for me? I'm willing to pay up to $400.

I believe you can buy them pre assembled, and as far as the cost, that is something you'll probably have to call a few places for. You can always bite the bullet and install it yourself, maybe with a few friends, but before you do so, have a back up plan if anything fails, also, give yourself a couple days at the least if this is your daily driver. good luck.

Think is, I could buy the OME-cheaper, and have higher labor cost, or the toytec-more expensive, with lower labor cost, and I'd rather have the toytec, so I'm trying to see how the prices would compare with complete installation. If i could find a place to do it myself (with some buddies) I'd love it, but i don't see that being realistic at this point.

I responded to you on a different thread but I figure I would comment to you directly as well as answer your other questions.

You don't need a professional hoist to in install your lift. I know you have a limited but unsure if you have XREAS. If you have a decent floor jack and two jack stands with basic hand tools, you can install the lift yourself. Always helpful to have an extra set of hands but not required. if you do have XREAS, its helpful (also not required) to have 4 jack stand so all the wheels are in the air and you can disconnect the XREAS line without losing any fluid. Just take your time and save the $500 and get the kit you want.

First time I did a suspension swap, I did it solo and took only a few hours including removing XREAS. There are many How-to threads so the information is available. Just prepare yourself by pre-soaking the bolts with PB blaster or equivalent a couple of days prior to the install, read up on the steps and it should go smoothly.

There are a bunch of 4Runner owners in CO who have installed lifts before so I would just put out some feelers for locals to help you out. $50 worth of Pizza and beer (or soda if you are underage) sounds alot better than $500. Plus, you have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and being able to make fixes on the trail.

Thanks Darkie/Kevin for the superb info. You are talking about the other lift thread I had that you replied on right? I do remember your responses there. I DO NOT HAVE XREAS, so that shouldn't be a big problem.

My uncle is a car guy, and hes been fixing up old sports car forever... anyway, he told me I needed a hoist, and I didn't question him, but doing it myself would be better than anything, just to achieve the satisfaction! Even if the shocks and coils and everything arn't assembled it doesn't take any out of the ordinary equipment? If thats the case then I'll be very excited.

There's tons of threads on the install. Check out the links in sticky at the top of the 4th gen section. A hoist would definitely help with the install, but not required at all. I've done this install twice, only need a floor jack, jack stands, basic hand tools, air compressor/impact, and a spring compressor (if the shocks/coils are unassembled). I wouldn't think the install price would be that much different, I can assemble the shocks/coils in 30 minutes or less.

Makes sense. A hoist would make it much easier but not necessary.

If the front shocks are not assembled you have a few of options:

1. Rent or buy spring compressors and do it yourself. This is time consuming and potentially dangerous if you are getting stiffer springs.

2. Use the spring compressor-less method that Brian (Photog) documented - OME Install - no spring compressor - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

3. Find a shop that has a professional spring compressor and pay them approx $20 to assemble them for you.

Another thing...purchase or rent a proper ball joint tool to separate the spindle from the upper control arm:

Using the pickle fork style tool will damage your stock UCA boot.

I used this thread as a guide for installing my OME front coils. I found it much easier to do it this way since you don't have to mess with separating the ball joints. Again, check the suspension FAQ in the 4th gen section. Installing new coils/shocks is pretty much the same. I know there's a link to an install guide for the OW coilover kit, that should be pretty helpful.
