Cost to replace rear axle bearings.....

Called my local Toyota dealer. I was quoted $185/ each for the outer bearings. Are they kidding? What alternatives and seals including part numbers can be recommended? Thanks.

These are pressed on bearings. So the labor is going to be expensive.

Why do you think you need new bearings. It's really rare for them to fail...even after several hundred thousand miles.

I have replaced a noisy wheel bearing on the 4Runner, and have seen many other posts about people doing the same. I also replaced two on my old Jeep and two on my old Volvo. In my experience, wheel bearing failures are not rare.

My axle bearings are making noise in forward and reverse. I have had a whirring noise for about 2 years now that has become loud enough to be able to tell where its coming from. At first I was thinking pinion bearings, but wasn't sure. It still may be pinion bearings. One way or another I'm going to spend money to repair the noise. My rationale was to start simple with axle bearings and see if that does it. If not I will replace the center section with a completely rebuilt one which should solve all my issues. I'm not going to have a shop spend time and my money to open it up and see what's going on. I will do this myself. For me if its necessary to make any repairs to the center section I will replace it. That will give me a 5 year warranty. Everything in the center section will be new. I feel this is the most cost effective way, and will minimize the down time.

Actually, for a OEM replacement, that's not a bad price. The OEM part number for the left side is 4246060010. Quick search and a couple of sites are listing it over $250. It's also sort of a big job, 2.8 hours per side.

rockauto has Timken bearings, which I think are fine, for about $100/ea.

If there are a lot of failures..then I'd consider that a design flaw. They SHOULD last the life of the vehicle. I've never had to replace one on any vehicle I've owned....most went well past 300k miles...my 98 pathfinder was even approaching 500k miles.

$185 is not bad at all.

Make sure you get a new inner and outer oil seals too.

I replaced my left bearing on my previous 2002 Tacoma.

Getting the parts is the easy part. You can talk to villagetoyotaparts.com for the seals for a cheaper price.

the challenging feat is to get the old hub bearings off. You'll have to make a device that will bolt to the back of the wheel hub (same side the axle bolts to.); however, the device must allow the axle shaft to protrude through it allowing you to set the device in a press to press out the axle shaft.

Odds are likely that the outer cup from the outer bearing will not press off with the rest of the assembly. You'll have to take a cut off wheel and cut it off with minal damage to the shaft itself.
