Could someone tell me what this 3rd is worth?

This is a duplicate post, same vehicle on another.

Assuming its Real, I'd have to say, no two ways about it, It Is Over-Priced, period. If miles don't get a vehicle, TIME will.

$20K for a 3rd gen. I don't believe the mileage, not for one second.

A sucker is born every minute. Unfortunately there are sooo many fans of our trucks that now slimly resellers are buying these trucks at auction, sometimes even ROLLING BACK THE MILEAGE and then selling them to suckers.

Notice that the truck isn't even registered in CA. Does he live in CA? Then it has to be registered here. The only exception is for military but even then it would need to be registered in the home state of the military person (eg Ohio) within 10 days of purchase. The sales tax MUST be PAID. ALWAYS. They will come after him or you for not paying the sales tax and registering it.

VIN #? If he isn't willing to share it then that is suspect.

Be sure to not only do CARFAX but also search Toyota's website with the VIN # for any dealer maintenance records where they would have written down the mileage.

And those WHEELS .... are those even from an SR5 4Runner? They look like cheap Tacoma 15" wheels, not a 4Runner.

Be sure to ask him:

* Where is the car originally from?

* How long has he owned the car?

* Why is he even selling it?

* Where is the paperwork from the original owner?

* Why wasn't hasn't it been registered in CA yet, the law says 10 days max, no exceptions

* Has it been CA smogged yet? FYI now that it's 2019 there is a new LAW and smogging is a LOT more difficult. I failed the first try and my truck runs damn near perfect with no issues or CEL.

To me this looks like a classic case of someone buying a clean looking $4,500 4Runner at auction, rolling back the miles (totally possible, happens all the time), taking it to AZ for easy registration and new title issuance, putting new wheels on it and trying to sell it for STUPID price of $20,000.

Sorry I am terrible at using forum. Thank you for the reply. I am not asking whether it's overpriced. I am asking what you would pay for it.

It was purchased from a dealer he was hoping to flip it, and has it listed in AZ to for sale. The original dealer was in AZ and it has passed smog. I know this because I tried to buy it originally.

I mean the dealer verified the truck for me, but they could be lying about the story too. It looks exceptionally clean in the pictures. I asked about the wheels a while back and someone said these might have been swapped not sure. IF the mileage is accurate. What would you pay? All things considered.

Oops, yeah sorry. In that case, personally I don't like that model so it would have to be 'given' away. I've had a limited too long to know the difference....

even if it had that many miles, the price they are asking compared to the kelly blue book is a bit up there. thats great to see what good condition it is in but no matter the car i would always have it checked by a professional:snacker: mechanic just to be safe. yes also check the carfax and dealership. the question i have is if that car really does have that many miles at that age it tells me it has been sitting for quite some time..which can be very bad for any car. all in all i really dont think the price is even close to what its worth. awesome cars! 3rd gen is the best but really check into these things before making a purchase as high as this one..(just my opinion):snacker:
 
Sure and sorry I don't mean to sound negative.

I don't think that truck is worth $15k. If he bought it for that then it's his choice.

$15K is near half cost of a brand new damn nice Tacoma.

Also just fyi but you don't need to quote the entire huge post. You can edit it or not quote, I'm following along plenty fine :)

It's a plain Jane low mile SR5. Even in the California market I'd pay no more than 12. It doesn't have a Diff lock, it has the standard Multimode lock switch, WHICH IS NECESSARY TO MAKE IT FULL TIME 4WD. I HATE when people call that a locking differential. Technically it is, but ALL OF THEM have it. Its standard fare.

The brake booster alone would turn me away from 01-02s.
 
Here’s my assessment: I don’t doubt the mileage, as you cannot fake that level of cleanliness on a vehicle that’s 18 years old. Even if you’re OCD from day 1, it’s impossible to keep it that pristine. I don’t care if Larry Kosilla detailed it before the photo shoot. You just can’t get a undercarriage to look that clean in a vehicle over 100k miles. Physically, the only two suspect areas are the bent antenna, and there’s a trim grommet missing on the trim at the center console in the passenger footwell.

Having said that, the price is very steep...obviously way too steep that it makes most of us uncomfortable, myself included. $25k for a near base model 3rd gen is just bananas. If you have $25k, then get a nice 3rd gen for less than $8k, and use the rest for builds and restoration efforts, and make it your own. For $8k, you can definitely find a high trim SR5 or Limited, complete with sunroof, sports seats, and other goodies. In my opinion, that would be money better spent. These 3rd gens are not going to become collectibles. No 4Runners will ever see collectible status, except for really mint 1st gens. You might as well get one that’s well maintained, continue to love it, and enjoy it.
 
The high end KBB using an Irvine, CA zip code is less than $9000 private sale, excellent condition w/ 35k. I don't really understand how the owner thought he could make money buying it retail from a dealer then trying to flip it in a private sale. $20k is stupid money for this vehicle. For a little more money you could buy a turned in leased 2016 4Runner with 30-40k on it. The seller paid way to much for that runner, he's nuts. You should be able to buy a clean, lower mileage gen 3 for $3500-$8000. Anything over that would have to be for a nice, heavily modified one. If I had to have this 4Runner, just couldn't live without it, I'd probably go to $10k on it, that's about it. No sunroof, steel wheels, it's a pretty base model.

Yes and no. KBB price on these vehicles are not the reality, as 3rd gens are pretty sought-after, and good ones are getting harder and harder to find now. It’s not full on cult status, but the 3rd gen does have a solid following. I mean, just look at this forum. Kbb and TrueCar are great for gauging run of the mill used car prices. If you’re in the market for a used Camry, KBB prices will give you a decent barometer for how much you should pay.but 4Runners, Land Cruisers, even GXs are not going to adhere to the KBB pricing line.

Dude I have 260K miles and my interior is cleaner than that one. It could easily be a 120-150k mile truck that was rolled back if you were judging by looks alone.

Now perhaps it's real. Op has good reason to think so and he's chasing it down.

The interior is certainly clean but one could easily pull apart a car with a garage to clean it up if it meant make a few thousand more.

I'll never understand the insanity that people have to buy low mileage cars at an extreme premium. Stripping a car down to a shell isn't that hard and if you have the money to fix things without having to have the sit for a while you could easily do it in a few months.
 
might be apples to oranges but I bought my 1998 4runner from around Irvine, CA back in 2013. Had 86,000 miles on it - clean, white, all services done including timing belt, new tires - was a 2wd model though.

I paid $3000

So - $22,500 is way over the top - even if that's true mileage. Buy a used one for $5,000 and have $17,500 left for mods.

I'm not disagreeing, I just don't understand it. Cars / trucks are meant to be driven and if they aren't rusted apart can easily be fixed back to essentially brand new condition.

Someone bought a low mileage 93 Supra for well over 100k. I just don't get it, and if I bought a low mileage one I'd flip it, buy a different one and pocket the difference.

I'm on the side of getting it. While I wouldn't pay a ridiculous premium and would buy a vehicle that has higher miles that I felt was taken better care of than one with lower miles, I do understand why people put a premium on it. Low miles means more than just low miles on the engine/driveline. Means that all of the little things also have low use on them. Knobs, seats, switches, etc etc.

Problem is that people put too much of an emphasis on low miles. Which is why you have people who exploit that by up-selling ones that fit the bill.
