Couple 2004 4R issues - tire pressure gauge and remote key lock not working

Hey gang,

A while back, like 3-4 oil changes ago, I got my truck back from service, and the tire pressure warning light was on. I talked to the guy who brought me the truck, and he took it back in to look at the tire pressures. Everything checked out, so I made them note it in the computer. Next time I came in, said do the oil change and fix the tire pressure light. Came back an hour later with the light still on. I asked what was up, and they said, "oh, you have to take that to service to get it looked at". So time has gone by, an oil change or two, and now the light is still on. I'm having a feeling that they are not going to fix this without a cost to me.

Do you think its safe and/or easy to disable the light? Would that be an uncool thing to do if I'm planning on selling it within the next year?

Also, the last few days, the truck has not been locking with the keyless device. You can hear the locks try to move, but no single beep. THe unlock seems to work fine, and it will eventually lock if I press enough buttons, but its getting frustrating. Does this sound like the locks are about to go out? Or maybe just a bad battery in the emitter?

As for the tire pressure light, did you check the spare? It's checking all 5 wheels; one of them is below 27 psi. There are members who have disabled the light; personally, I think the light is a good safety feature, but it's up to you. Obviously, the truck will work fine without it.

The lock issue could be the battery... not sure. Usually you'll notice the battery going as the working distance drops. (You have to be closer to the truck to make it work.)

As toto said, check the spare, that's usually the culprit with the tire pressure sensor.

There are quite a few possibilities with your remote not locking. The battery is one possibility. I've heard of a few people having faulty locks which will cause the truck to try and lock but nothing ends up happening. Check each lock individually to see if one of the locks is not working right.

Have you replaced batteries in key fob?

On the tire pressure light, I'd be surprised if the spare isn't low.

On the door locks not working, it could be time for a battery replacement in the key fob. As batteries get weak, the door locks become intermittent...

Just a couple of things to check.

I've got the key-fob-door-lock-trouble too. Sometimes locks will snap locked smartly but no confirm beep from the truck.

Other times beep is good but drivers door lock struggles and does not make it to the locked position. Half way maybe.

This all started after the truck was parked outside for several hours under a record hi temp day a couple weeks ago. The whole rig was furnace hot and at the next stop the locks were not locking. Problem persists even in the cooler evenings now - but only about half the time.

Thanks for the tip on the spare. I had no idea it was monitored, too. How do those sensors work anyway?

I've played around with the lock, and yeah, it does seem to be only the driver's door that has a problem. I can lock it with the key, and the remote works perfectly, both unlocking and locking the other doors. But when the driver's door is unlocked with the key, it's hit or miss. Almost like its ignoring the driver's door sometime. Kind of a strange one, and it's frustrating, cause I really have to pay attention to whether the truck gets locked or not now.

TPM system has 5 stems each with a registered frequency to your vehicle only. If one of those stems reports a pressure lower that 27 psi, it will light up the indicator on the dash. If you move the stems (and tires) outside of 20 feet from the vehicle, it will no longer register The spare is a pain in the a** to drop and refill, but once you do it, you are good for a while (year or so). I use it as a chance to inspect the spare and clean out the well so I know I have a reliable spare waiting.

As far as the door locks, you may just have a sticky link somewhere. The vehicle has a central location for the security to register.
