Couple little issues if anyone wants to take a stab at it

it's a 97 sr5 4x4

1) when i turn off my car, sometimes it unlocks the doors, and sometimes it doesn't. where do i start looking for shorts?

2) is there any way to get the doors to unlock just by opening the handle from the inside like most newer cars? as is current, i have to use the button. no big deal but it gets kind of annoying

3) a have a crap ton of rust on the undercarriage. the guy who had the truck before me was from up north. is there a sprey solution i can use to get rid of some of it? so i need a paintshop to do the work?

on number 1, fwiw i noticed the same quirks when i first got my ride. What i learned with mine is it all depends on the certain sequence of certain events, like opening the door, turning the ignition on, etc. Cant really remember all the details but i got used to the quirks after understanding when it locked/unlocked and why and i am at peace with it now.

On number 2, i doubt it but dont really know for sure. I think i came across at one time a deal on how to disable the automatic locks and a bunch of other factory programming functions like light timers, and other functions. It was weird, like get in, close the door, open the door, and some things with the ignition, push the odometer button etc dont really remember though but im pretty sure its possible. I found it when i was searching how to get into the programing mode on the vip alarm system. Ill see if i can re-find it.

2) I don't believe there is. My Mercedes does this, but the handle is mechanically intertwined with the locks to unlock them as the handle is used (front doors only).

I'm in the habit of hitting the button in synchronicity with turning off the ignition, even though they unlock themselves in my car so it's practically useless for me to do so... gets annoying when I'm driving other cars at work and I hit the mirror switch or something similar.

k, here is a thread that talks about your auto lock/unlock issue:

In the thread this link gives you the programming instructions to disable the autolock feature, but take note, i believe this is specific to the RS3000 VIP system. not sure how, if at all it would work if you have a different alarm system or dont have one at all.

thanks guys... and one more question. to unlock my doors, i press down (toward the rear of the car) on the button, and to lock, i press up (toward the front of the car). compared to every other car i have ever been in, this is backward. did someone cross up some wiring in my car or are all the 4r's like this?

They are all like that............at least my 98 is!!
