The fire is out and supposedly they are letting OHV use the roads again. Anyone make it out to monache using the Jeep trail this week? Is it passable without a river swim?

Just wondering if there are any bears in the area? Is it something to plan for, i.e. bear bagging the food over night?

There are absolutely bears... I had my own encounter with them.

Be careful. Snow storms are moving in Thursday evening and will continue until Monday I believe. Supposed to drop around 2ft at the elevations Coyote Flat is at.

We ended up hitting the Alabama Hills before charging up to Mazourka Canyon where we camped for the night at Santa Rita Flats. Holy cow -- it was as cold as it was beautiful. The next day, we finished the canyon drive on beautiful sunny day. Spent the weekend climbing around Bishop in largely perfect weather before hitting Alabama Hills for a little more climbing before returning home. A great weekend in the Eastern Sierras. From what I understand the snow was mostly on the Western Sierras, as passes through Yosemite were closed. We got lucky.

How'd you like Mazourka? Do the entire thing? Was worried about my tires slicing the entire time on that damn trail. Plus I got some rain while doing it so some of those areas was like ice. Thankfully there's no real cliff sections.

Loved it. The bulk of the canyon is cake. Aired down tires and took it slow and had no problems. There was one big rut that I had to negotiate delicately, but overall it was fine. Definitely would not have wanted to do it in wet conditions as there were a couple areas that were close to some drop offs -- so kudos to you. Apparently a lot of people having been doing the trail in side by sides, so the ruts we were told by a local were deeper than usual. In fact, we slammed pretty hard at one point through a flat section of the trail -- but that's what armor is for I suppose. It was fun and engaging without being terrifying. There appears to be a lot of potential for camping and rock climbing (with hands not truck) around Papoose Flats which was a beautiful area.

Nice pics, glad you didn’t run into any snow issues.

Yeah that trail can be a little slippery when wet. Aired down as well, but still those rocks weren’t my biggest fan. Granted we do a lot of stuff solo so don’t like risking anything out off the grid.
