***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

I rather do this:

Coverlay® - Toyota 4Runner 2003 Dashboard Cover

I had this cover before and they are awesome!!! I think they refund your money back if you are not fully satisfy, they are plastic and will last you a lifetime.

I also bought the DashTex and it is ok/satisfactory. I might be looking into the Coverlay. Do you have any pics of the Coverlay?

My .02 cents from my automotive knowledge is this.

One or more of the chemicals that the supplier used for the dash is breaking down over time. I would not think that anything we do or don't do will stop this chemical breakdown from happening. There is a chemical in the plastics/resins that is breaking down with time.

It would be hard to tell if they changed the manufacturing of the material. Only Toyota would be able to answer that. A lot of times you can determine this from part#s.

Might just have to wait and see if the newer models start doing this. So far I havent seen any 06 and up with this problem.

To my knowledge, the newer guys haven't had any issues......I have only heard of one person actually having theirs replaced on the dealer's dime. My dealer said they would give me a couple hundred bucks towards a new one, but that still doesn't work for me.

I have really been tempted to try a cover lay....just keep finding other stuff to drop the money on.

Mine cracked over the period of a week. I drove it, then put it in the garage for a week and when I got back in it, I noticed a crack that goes from the driver's side, follows the curve over the gauges and goes all the way over to the top of the radio. My 4Runner is always garage kept when not in use. My interior is in mint condition other than this ugly looking crack now. I think Toyota should do something about all these cracked dash problems people are having, but they probably won't.

My 05 SR5 has the same issue. I bought it used 2 yrs ago and the crack was not there. Now it's like a hair line fracture starting from the right side of the stereo that goes all the way over and across to the vent next to the driver's side door.

Hey Ginneta, I noticed that you live in Summerville. That's where I lived when I bought my 4Runner brand new from Gene Reed Toyota on Rivers Ave. Did you buy yours used from there? I live in Wilmington, NC now and don't really want to drive all that way just to show them this crack and probably get turned away. Mine feels very sticky or tacky when it gets heated up from the sun, and I've never used any kind of Armor All, just a damp cloth. Every now and then I would use this vinyl cleaner that the dealership recommended and sold in there parts department. I think it's called Vinylex, it's in a blue bottle.

Beanz Mine gets sticky and tacky also when it heats up, does yours change colors in those areas or start to look shiny as well?

Hey Beanz, no I bought mine from a small used dealer! But I did use to work for Gene Reed, it's now owned by the Rick Hendrick group. I do use Meguiar's on mine occasionally. I haven't noticed a sticky or tacky feel since I just noticed my crack after I installed the new stereo in the fall. I'll have to keep an eye on that though. I dont think taking mine to Gene Reed would do any good considering I didnt buy it from them and there is no warranty (190K miles) and Toyota is not accepting liability for this issue. sorry, wish i could help more!

Yes, mine does change colors. When the temperature is cooler it has a hazy white look and feels smooth and dry to the touch and when it gets hotter, the hazy white color disappears and it becomes shiny looking and sticky.

I am posting on every forum that I come across with this cracking dashboard problem the phone numbers to Toyota Motor Sales, USA. I wish we could all come together on this and keep their phones ringing off the hook with this problem. It would be nice if somebody started a class action suit against them.
This is just wrong of Toyota to ignore this problem. Why can't they do a recall and install the dashes from the 06-09 models which i read is made with a better quality material. Here are the phone numbers to Toyota, you will need your VIN number. Please people, call, raise hell with them!

I also contacted the following agencies to complain to them the possible unexpected deployment of the passenger side airbag if the crack gets to bad.

Office of Defects Investigation (ODI)
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)

I am pissed off people. To pay 40K and take very good care of it and have the dash fall apart for no apparent reason is unacceptable. Mine even stays in the garage five days a week.
Here's what I say to Toyota ":flipoff:"

Hey guys im new to the forum, been checking out all your rigs. I too have the cracked dash issue, but mine is really bad. I picked my 03 runner used and Im thinking of getting it fixed but i want to know is what color is the dash. Black or dark grey?

Has anyone had a successful way of repair for the cracks?

I bought my 04 4runner about 3 weeks ago. Mine looks like it started cracking after the previous owner screwed a sat. radio pod or something to the dash. :frusty:

Its two small 2" or so cracks spreading from where the screw was.

So after buying ours a month and a half ago with a really bad cracking dash, i couldnt stand looking at it so i decided to go and get a Coverlay from JC Whitney cuz it was the cheapest place i could find at 157 shipped. I was kinda iffy on buying one cuz i fear that it might not fit right or the color may be way off.. When i received it did a dry fit i was totally wrong, it was perfect even around the center speaker and the airbag cover was a tight fit. no gaps and the color is so close my wife couldnt tell..

Can you take a pic around where the dash meets the silver trim from the radio? It looks like a great fit!

That fits awesome!

What type of adhesive did you use to hold in place? Which color is that?

Its the Dark Gray one and it comes with a tube of clear silicone but I used alot of it and pretty much ran out for the airbag but good thing i had an extra one in my tool box.. what i suggest if you have a center speaker is to take out the speaker cover using a paint scraper to lift it then place book over it and something heavy on the book so that it seals tight then when its dry place back the cover. Doing this will eliminate you getting silicone on the speaker cover

I couldn't wait till Toyota did something about it, I've seen the posts and seen everyone sending in a complaint and nothing has been done about it. If they had plans it would had happen by now and the service manager at a Toyota dealership told me that it would be very unlikely they would do anything.

I have had one of these in my basket several time but always ended up finding other uses for the $$. I am so glad to see somebody has tried it. Thanks for posting the pics!....:first: gaterose
