***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

Dropped off my 4Runner this morning to get the dash replaced - went in for inspection and get the part ordered about a month ago.

At the inspection I made sure to inquire about my aftermarket radio - they said it would be no issues (I was worried about my bluetooth microphone and DVD switch). I asked the same question at drop off, and they said no issues.

When I went to pick it up, the microphone was gone and so was the switch. When I asked about it, they said the tech got confused with all the wires and just shoved everything behind the radio. I had anticipated this might be an issue, so I had my tools with me and took it apart, and as I did a few things bothered me - an extra screw fell down out of nowhere, and there was no microphone to be found. The tech found it in his "used tool pile" as an 'extra wire.'

But I was so concerned about the stereo that I didn't even really inspect the dash. As I was putting it back together, it seemed slightly out of place. When I went to tug on it, there was about an inch and a half of easy play. I immediately pulled back up and they said they would have to take a look tomorrow.

I asked if it was the first dash recall they did, and they said it was probably number 3. Maybe the first for that tech...

Like I said before, this is why I am waiting till the final month of the recall in 2017 to decide if I do it or not. I don't need anybody practicing on my truck.

Maybe I'm just drunk right now but is your car freakin' bent?

My eyes are playing games with me right now and it is winning.

Cracked dashes

I have an 03 4runner and my dash is cracked on the leading front edge from the left window all the way to the glove box. The glove box itself also has several cracks. I received a notice from Toyota in March of this year about the recall. I was informed to wait until the end of summer so that they could build up an inventory of the dashes. Last week (9/10/15) I went to my local dealership and was told by the service rep that he had no knowledge of any recalls. I told him to check with the service manager, because I received a notice directly from Toyota. His supervisor verified the recall. They then will take a picture of your damaged dash and submit it to Toyota. Once verified and approved by Toyota the part will be sent to the dealership for installation. So, if you want to get this taken care, I would go to your dealership asap since this seems to be a limited time offer. Also, if the service rep is clueless about this recall, don't take no for an answer. Ask for the supervisor or technical service bulletin on the problem. Apparently these guys aren't in-serviced about TSBs because a couple of years ago I had to take them a copy of a TSB on their O2 and A/F sensors failing.

If you read through the previous threads and the warrenty enhancement letter you got in the mail it says that Toyota will replace the dashes through sometime in 2017. The dealership just has to inspect your dash for cracks, stickiness, etc., to see if it qualifies and then simply order the new parts.

It's NOT a Recall at all. It's a Warranty Enhancement Program. I too got letter which said I'd received 2nd letter by the end of May. Never got it and local FL dealer has yet to do any repairs. Seems folks in the hot, humid climates where condition is worse and first appears are NOT getting priority treatment. Argh now supposedly Nov-Dec? So are those that are getting theirs repaired getting a part that won't hold up if they move South. Mine is really looking bad with the dark grey covering chipping off around the cracks. With only 85k miles my 2003 4Runner is perfect save for the cracking dash and corroding SE alloy wheels. I'd really take a beating selling it like it is now. Still waiting for that second letter promised by the end of May!

Update on New Dash

I read over the post by BlackWorksInc and I can confirm my dash was in fact a new dash - at least according to the part number on my service receipt.

And according to the parts list, there were two color options, and it looks like they picked the wrong one... :redbrick:

I went back to my Toyota dealer and apparently there are 2 colors for the dash: grey and fawn.

My dash is fawn (i.e. tan). That part of it matches fairly well.

What doesn't match is the dash "pad" on top.

They took pictures and are getting in touch with Toyota. I will update as I found out more.

Got my 2nd letter a couple of days ago, brought it in this morning for inspection, and they ordered the new dash and said it would be one week (doesn't sound likely, but that's fine). I was looking at the work order and noticed the "new" dash part number ordered is:

55401-35908-B0

I don't see this part number in the following image (taken from ZE6 TSB posted by BlackWorks), but it looks more like an older part number. So I have two concerns:

Is this a new part number?
Is this the right color?

By the way, I have 2003 Sport Edition (with dark grey interior, seats, etc).

Got mine replaced last weekend. Came out good aside from the center speaker trim being cracked. They are taking care of it though. The new color of the dash looks duller than the old, but it could be the years of products being added to it.

Just on a side note on my post two posts above, doing a google search on the part number they ordered, I found several online Toyota parts stores listing that part number, which makes me think this is the OLD dash part number. :ybrick:

Ok, update on my last two posts just above. After feeling pretty confident that they ordered the old dash part number, I called the dealer again. First talked to the service dept, who told me parts dept would not be able to order the wrong part number. They told me to call the parts dept to discuss why that part number was ordered. I hang up and call the parts dept and ask them to pull up the TSB. They pull that up, but also pull up a different document that lists warranty parts replacement (or something like that). This other document has more of the old part numbers and the corresponding new part numbers (04005-14935 for me). So then he said they would order 04005-14935-B1 and I say "NO NO NO, it should be 04005-14935-B0". He says "oh, you're right, B1 is the lighter color". So hopefully 04005-14935-B0 is on order.

So based on my research, I believe the following are the OLD > NEW part number combos:

(standard dash) 55401-35900 or 55401-35908 > 04005-14935
(premium audio) 55401-35901 or 55401-35909 > 04005-15135

-B0 is the darker gray (for dark gray or stone interior)
-B1 is lighter (for fawn interior)

Looking at the parts on the following Toyota parts website was helpful (scroll to Pad Sub-Assy, Instrument Panel Safety section):

Lol, I'm still baffled by these mysterious letters. I have received 0 letters and mine is being replaced on Oct. 6th. with the case number I received in April. I gave the case # to the dealer and they took care of the rest.

Yeah I dunno what's going on with the part numbers.. I think that's part of the reason that the parts aren't being released without pictures and emails sent to PDC so that the dealers are ordering the correct part numbers.

Now if only we could stop getting them damaged/defective 1/4 of the time.

Had my dash ordered yesterday through Hendrick Toyota in Apex NC. I was told it might be a month or two because there on back order. Once it arrives they will contact me to schedule a day for the install and provide me a rental car at no charge.

Did you by any chance purchase the (current) 4Runner from that particular dealership where you are having it done? I tried getting a loaner but their policy was only toward customers whom purchased vehicles from their dealership rather than 3rd party sellers

No. I work for the company.

While that's somewhat logical, it a warranty job which means it's gonna get flat rated as much as possible (you break about even taking your time and going mostly by the book I've found doing dashes.) So if the tech that is gonna work on your dash is cutting corners they'll do it in 2017... or you might get lucky. There's been enough Camry dashes out that most of the "dash guys" have got how to do it down.
