Cracked Head Thread

^^ Makes sense.

Sucks, because im @ 180K and i'm starting to see coolant disappear from the resevour bottle little by little. Looks like i'll be upgrading mine soon.

180?

have you done your timing belt and water pump???????

its time. and thats when the WP will start to leak usually. right around the time its calling for the TB/WP maint. isnt it every 90k miles?

I'm about the to do the TB and WP. Im also upgrading the Radiator to an all Aluminum 3 row for extra safety.

Just nervous now thinking the heads might be cracked.

Wondering if a compression test could maybe help, but im assuming not.

if i would have dont a cold compression test it would have definately told me which cylinder had the crack, but then at that point i wouldn't have known if it was a head gasket, or head problem

you never know till you take it apart.

good to hear :)

Apologies for the thread hijack, but what BMW did you have? This was mine:

Very nice e36, I like it. I use to have an e36 M3 year ago. Don't have any pics of it online anywhere though. Here are my e39's.

#3 Cracked at 215K '97 4 Runner, 2.7 3FZE

Year: 1997
Model: 2.7 3RZE
Milage/KMs(specify):215,960
Driver Side/ Passenger side (specify): N/A Inline 4 Cyl
Which Cyl: #3

I bought it used (180K Miles) with cracked exhaust mani. I fixed it straight away. When the overheating happened, I flushed the radiator and found that there was the copper gasket seal in the coolant. The Radiator passed the block test twice (so the sealant was working), Then overheating happened intermittently, seemingly at random.

Nobody could figure out the problem. Took it to a very qualified mechanic. Took the head off, shipped it to specialist. Found #3 head cracked. :flame:

Installed aftermarket head, New exhaust valves, new thermo, etc. Much improved head and gasket. :boink:

Arrgghh! I feel completely betrayed by my Yota. Looking at a $5,000+ repair bill.

1.) Should I have them do the timing belt and water pump while they are at ?
2.) For another $2k should I have them do the other side?
3.) anyone who can do their own work want to buy an otherwise beautiful 2000 Jade Mica 4Runner the last year of the five speed manuals? It's got a brand new $1,000 audiophile quality stereo with amp, viper alarm, Yakima racks and a nice set of color matched weather tech floor mats.

Oh and I am strongly of the opinion this is a defect not a normal wear item. I miss my first gen which I sold in great shape with 360,000 on it. It was slow and didn't have A/C but it never screwed me like this.

Cracked the passenger side head, center cylinder on my 1996 4runner 2 years ago with about 225K miles. Picked up a used head and cleaned it up, lapped the valves, set my clearances and bolted it on. That lasted until yesterday...used replacement head cracked on the rear cylinder. Vehicle has 245K miles now. I'm not in the mood to keep playing this game so I just dumped some Bar's Leak 1111 in it...sealed right up. It's only used around town so I'm not worried about it blowing up on a long trip or something.

Bumping this thread from the dead.

I'm at ~199k miles. Bought it from the original owner who took care of it. Just replaced the radiator with an aluminum setup and external trans cooler. Noticed it's starting to consume coolant as there are no leaks anywhere.

What do you guys think? Should I pull the heads to be preventative? hoping to save the cost of having to replace the heads if so.

Plan on keeping this thing forever so looking for the proper fix, not a band aid.

Surely you would put forth the effort on a leakdown test before pulling heads, right?

+1 of what amalik said. Jumping to pulling heads immediately seems like your making a huge assumption. If it were me I'd do a leak down and due diligence in terms of diagnosis before pulling heads. If it just started after you replaced the radiator and added the external tranny cooler that doesn't seem coincidental and I'd assume they are related somehow.

Wow, haha reading this thread has made me scared of this now lol. I've heard of it but didn't think it was that common, and even on 4runners with both low and higher mileage. Makes me nervous now because I am at 202K miles right now but haven't had any problems at all... knocking on wood!!! Also making me second guess supercharging too. hmmm.

Has anyone tried the ebay heads on a 5vz or am I better off with some remans from Cylinder Heads International/Heads Only out of TX?

Looking for an affordable enough fix as this truck is my little sisters (just started driving) and will only be used around town to get her to school.
