Cracked my front differential housing

Was off roading today and when backing up off an obstacle heard a pop. Wheels were straight and I didn't feel any binding. Turns out I blew the passenger side INNER CV joint. Strange but I thought no biggie I will finish out the trail in 3WD. Diff oil starts pouring out of my skid plates. I pulled them off to find a crack in the front differential housing. The crack is also on the passenger side of the clamshell.

FYI I have an ARB and 4.88s.

Is this repairable? It looks like you could weld it on both sides.
Or is it better to just replace?

id pull it and open it up before i would make the call, either way you will have to do that. it could be welded, but i would question the weld, i personally think i would get a new clam shell, but thats just me.

I've never done such a thing, but if it were me, I'd say replace it.

On a side note, I'm always amazed at the parts that you guys who wheel the piss out of your rigs manage to break. Some of you ought to be hired as product development people... to test new vehicles before toyota releases them. If there were flaws, I'm sure you'd find them.

weld it Bill, And lets go break it again. Its easy to pull apart, and no setup required if you keep the old gears and clamshell

Jason,

I am going to get the internals inspected and then we will see. It was weird that the inner joint exploded. I am starting to get real tired of dealing with weak IFS CRAP.

CARNAGE PICS!!!

The crack runs from that bolt all the way down and through the bottom.

bill thats just the add tube/housing. I be you broke the stub shaft like Scuba did awhile back. Just pull off that tube, its easy but you will need a e14 torx. good luck

Take the add actuator off first. It has a fork that will have to be re aligned when you put it back together

And I broke all 4 since june :) Bill breaks them all the time too. Front lockers RULE!!!!

Figured something out.

At some point my shock has over extended allowing itself to droop further than its supposed to. I would say at least an inch overextended.

I was just thinking a few days ago.. Carry a spare CV or 2 like we do, but also have an old inner as a last resort type of thing just to plug the diff if you're out of CVs.

I just saw this thread, that sucks Bill. But you womp on that thing, so kudos to you for cracking that sh*t with a skid plate even! So did the pieces of the stub shaft grenade inside and break the housing or what?

I am driving around with no front driveline!

No damage to any of the internal components. Just the cracked ADD actuator housing. It was a rough trip, someone else flopped and I also damaged my passenger fender.
