Cracked windshield from de-icer

So I was out and about today during a snowy day and was using my wiper de-icer. I know it wasn't there when I got in the truck but when I looked a bit later, sure enough there was a crack about 5" starting from the de-icer going up the windshield. I'm thinking this would be a warranty fix. Any thoughts?

I think it is unlikely that heater caused it, probably an imperfection in that area from manufacturing or an impact, and cold/heat expanded it. It will be nearly impossible to have it covered under warranty unless you purchased it in the last few days.

Yup, small chip that spread. Good luck getting that covered. Insurance company is your best bet, or, pony up the bucks yourself.

You had a small chip/crack that propagated when you put heat on a cold windshield and the expansion caused stress on it.

Like most are saying small chip then heat/cold/truck vibration Ect is making it spread. Mine just crack last week, going to be my 2nd (windshield) now in less then 8 months, my agent just laughed at me and said to let him know when I want to replace it.

Damn! Not what I wanted to hear but... I'm gonna check with my insurance company in the AM. Thanks for the wisdom

I'm in the market for a replacement as well. Can you let me know which company you used to replace it, which glass (OEM Toyota or aftermarket) and if there were any issues?

Why even claim it with your insurance?

1 its going to cost 200 bucks if that to fix i replaced mine and it was less then 200.

2. the insurance is going to make you pay that deductible so if its 250 or higher you screwed also claiming a repaired or new windshield counts against you as a claim thus putting you one step closer to being dumped.

i.e. insurance companies for instance state farm has 5 claims in 5 years and they cancel your policy, even if you have claims from different insurance company they look at lexis nexus to get info and will hold it against you

Not worth claiming it on a 200 dollar fix

For those Chicago folks if you need a window i went here
paid 195 and tax for a brand new windshield

The glass is Pilkington (supposed to be exact oem like but it's not)the bottom of the glass doesn't heat up as hot as the OEM, the vin# is covered more, and there are stupid marking on the glass up in the corners that were annoying at first by ok now as I don't notice them as much and the top tint isn't as dark.
I used safe lite, never again they suck balls. They broke a window molding clip and tried using double stick tape to hold it down and didnt tell me. They never secured my driverside wiper down and that next day it poured out. I turned them on and the driverside wiper went a quarter of the way up and slipped out of the nut so the passengerside Wiper hit the driverside bending it. I should of know when the guy said he would be there at 1 and didn't show till 3:30 because he "forgot my glass at the shop". They wanted to fix the clip and wiper but i told them to go f**k themselves, you already screwed me once. The OEM isn't fully covered because it expensive but that's what I'm getting OEM next and Toyota is doing it

Depending on your state and insurance company you may not have any deductible. Here in Colorado it's so common most companies include a new windshield if a crack is bad enough and all the repairs you need are free. It's separate from the deductible you would pay if you got in an accident. I'm sure it's different in other states.

Call the insurance company before you pay out of pocket for anything.

1. $2 is a great deal

2. in states with comp and collision there may not be a deductible in windshield replacement.

3. You could not be more wrong, without going into details, my wife works for State Farm Corp. The 5 in 5 years is a interwebs rumor that is perpetuated but people who have no clue about how insurance works. Every policy goes up for review every renewal, and when you have a claim, your policy gets reviewed. If your risk factor increases from claims or tickets your rate could go up. If you have had several tickets or claims, you will get a notice letting you know that you policy will not be avail for renewal. They will cancel you if you become a financial risk, comp and collision and theft do not count against your review. So if you replace 5 windshields in 5 years, you still get insurance.

Okay...all that said........the most important question is...WHY are you not at the Auto Show getting spy pics for us on the TRD Pro...?

Back on topic.

If you are in a state with C&C just call your insurance and ask how much you are liable for if any. no point in trying to get the dealer to do it, it will just be a waste of time.

It cost me $80 out of pocket in my 4th gen to get a windshield last year in TX.

Now I am in Ohio, so i am not sure how it will work if i need one, since Ohio is not a C&C state.

My deductible is $500 and insurance doesn't cover it straight out like some others. Here in Jersey, land of worst insurance, they don't have that option. Guess I'll be paying out of pocket. Safelite is out! Even though their stupid commercial works cause all I can think of is their stupid jingle.

and the 2 dollar was a typo my bad is was 200

moving forward

the 5 and 5 sadly wasn't passed on from the webs not all people do to the web for info. So now lets go into the facts

On the contrary that is not correct I had a bad accident last year i just received a letter saying in many more words

from state farm 1-24-14

9-11-2013 accident = statefarm
8-31-10 comprehensive coverage claim = allstate
1-17-2010 road service = again allstate

your policy with not be renewed as of march 20th 2014

You have 20 days prior to the date to appeal it with the director of insurance of the state of il

renewed and canceled in my book has the same underline meaning we are sorry we don't want your business

no tickets, and only those claims.

information regarding consumer report was from lexisnexus consumer center where they base it off the risk rating.

So yeah they do base it of their records and outside their company.

This is going nowhere fast, but you likely are getting dropped because you were a risk factor when you signed State Farm (meaning they were giving you coverage even though your record was sketchy). And then after they signed you, you likely had a claim in the first 18 months making you to high of risk.

No mater who you are, if you have had a collision claim in the past three years and acquire new coverage, you will be insured under a classification that will bar you from renewal if you have a new claim in your first 12-18 months of new coverage.

The 5 in 5 is interwebs rumor, it would be nice if insurance was that cut and dry, but it's not. And in states with comprehensive coverage (not all states have it) windshield replacement does not count against you, nor does vehicle theft.

I would love to keep arguing with you about something you think you know about, but I can assure you, I know far more about insurance than you do, having worked in it for several years myself, and my wife remaking with State Farm for the last 9 years.

If you still feel you have something to prove, please PM me and leave this guys thread alone.

Don't try the dealer.... They quoted me wholesale glass for our 08 tundra work truck. A bargain at $1235. I ended up getting glass from Advanced Auto Glass. Not sure if you have them in NJ but it was about $240.

Good luck.

Not arguing nor proving anything stating actual fact from my end. Im far from new with state farm. i had a policy with them for 20 years on several motorcycles, home owners, cars etc. the vehicle that was in a crash was new at the time. my driving record spotless

So it seems SF works different in what ever area you are in then from mine. Point being is making the claim on a windshield falls under comp and sf does list it as a claim which is against you. tho you and wife being in state farm for jobs i wouldn't expect you to even admit to it for obvious reasons. to end this on a final note you say one thing and tho i have the documentation saying otherwise. In the end the arbitration will handle it and decide on the matter. Good debating with you tho :thumb3:
