Cracked windshield

I'm going with the windshield that matched what I had from the factory (3rd Visor, Heated Wiper Park Area, Green Tint, Auto-Dim Mirror) - mainly for resale value concerns, but I'm 99.99% sure I will end up with 2-3 more windshields before I ever ponder selling my baby :) (had my Tacoma for 11 years :thumb: ). My Safelite quote ended up $436.86 "out the door" for that windshield. I doubt ditching the heated wiper park area would save much (not enough to worry about IMO).

PS - I found the Safelite stat I referenced above:

Hopefully they know what they are doing by now :tongue1: Our T4R's are obviously rock magnets (491 is probably 25% of the 5th gen 4Runners in Houston! - And this is just one glass company over a 12 month span!!!)

I priced mine on their website before I ordered it. The heated windshield was an extra $60 that I will never need. And I am glad to hear it is a simple circuit. I watched him disassemble everything just to see how it all comes apart. I just hope there is no next windshield.
 
Replaced Twice

I replaced the windshield twice in my 2011 which is the same glass as the 2014. Both times rocks kicked up on freeway. So far I have not on my 2014. But this is one of the weak points with this vehicle.

I have the heated windshield feature for my wiper blades I guess. I wonder if those heating elements are part of the windshield?

So far the $436 Safelite windshield is rocking and rolling! They did a good job from what I can tell (SO much better than the "old" (22 months old) cracked and chipped windshield)...

I'm doing my best to stay far away from dump trucks and crap, but with the continuous I-45 construction I encounter on my 110 mile per day journey, I'm sure it's just a matter of a few weeks until "Chip" and then "CRACK" (what's a guy to do :( )

PS - After I saw it mentioned around here, I picked up a HeatShield brand sun visor from Amazon - Perfect fit! Cut-out an opening for my Escort Radar, and good to go :)

Well, that lasted a bit more than a month :( Replaced in early August. *CRACK* last week on my drive to work (early September).

This continuous construction on I-45 is just too much for my T4R windshield to take. Oh well - what to do. I guess another $500 windshield is in store once the crack spreads to the driver's side :(

I feel your pain. I have gotten 3-4 good cracks and dings in the past year. Now they're resurfacing I-10 in the city and there's a ton of loose gravel everywhere. Lucky me too, since it's inspection time and I need to replace the glass to pass.
 
I had mine ('12 4Runner) crack from a rock while cruising down I-15 by the Vegas strip. I paid my $100 insurance deductible and they replaced it with Safelite glass. They came out to my home. Looks great, NO problems. The guy that replaced it was very efficient and very clean.

I suffered a small crack about 3 weeks ago in the black tinted area on the top passenger side. Never knew it was there until a hot day spread it lower. Safelite said it was for sure an impact and not just a crack from the top.

Now it has spread over 1/2 of my 2014 windshield. I will have to pay the full $500 deductible for OEM replacement from Safelite.

I have come to expect several of these in the coming years since here in Oregon they gravel the roads when there is snow or ice, no salt.
 
Thanks for the sentiments :) I almost shed a tear when this happened (I think I did shed a tear when my stock windshield cracked :( ). Actually got the nice crack (about 1/2 way across the passenger side to the rear-view mirror, and is quickly headed for the driver's side), and also got a nice 1/2" chip (a "divot" if you will) right next to it at the same time. I was assaulted by asphalt :frusty: Pooh!

I was actually completely satisfied with Safelite's installation (as mentioned on the previous page). Was under $500 out the door with the heated wiper area and all...

I'm REALLY interested in learning more about the Windshield Coatings THEROK mentioned at the end of the previous page.

Does anyone have first-hand experience with these windshield coatings? My main concerns would be related to wiper issues and/or streaking in rain along with longevity and any other considerations I haven't thought of.

It sounds like money well spent as long as you can get it applied immediately after you get a new windshield (and before it cracks - a relatively short window of time in my scenario!). But I'd like some real-world input from T4R owners to the crack/chip prevention capabilities of these windshield coating products in high-damage areas (like continuous freeway construction areas driving at freeway speeds with a very perpendicular windshield like our T4R's have, etc). I guess I'll start another thread on the specific topic to get more views...

2018 4Runner Limited

2018 4Runner Limited 3 months old. 2 weeks ago the front wind shield cracked right in the middle at the base. About an 8 inch long crack.

Now my wife just called and said she heard a loud bang and when she went outside the rear window had exploded while parked in the driveway. ? What the hell is going on with these windows?

This may be the last Toyota I buy!
 
Had a rock chip in the first year I got mines. My insurance deductible for glass repair was only 100 bucks and safelite came out to fix it. Some insurance companies offer a window replacement vs having to pay the whole normal deductible.

One thing to note, at the time when they came out to fix it, they asked if I had windshield wiper heaters as I wasn't sure at the time until I checked the manual. I believe all 4runners come stock with windshield wiper heaters/de-icer so just say yes.
