Craig's list sucks-4wd stuck

Hi all, I'm selling my 2000 limited and this happened. Potential buyer took it for a test drive, came back with it stuck in 4wd. I asked him what he did and his reply made me a bit upset. He said they pulled into parking lot, put truck in park, shifted into 4lo, put in drive and made several circles on pavement. He couldn't get it back into 2wd so just drove it the 2 miles back. I swear every drivetrain light on the dash was lit, and nothing I tried would get truck out of 4wd. What kind of damage could this idiot have done? Any ideas how to get 4wd freed up?

Holy crap. I'd be pissed. I hope you figure out how to fix it. He is suppose to have it in neutral for it to go into 4low. If he damaged it I'd try to make him pay for it.

That's too bad man... No idea what he could have done, but I guess the lesson learned is to not let some idiot, even a potential buyer, drive the 4Runner without you right next to him.

I feel for you. Trying to make some money, but probably going to end up losing a bit in the process.

Just happened an hour ago, haven't had time to look at it yet. Busy at work this week, so not much time till weekend. So mad right now, best to just sleep on it before I call him. Oh, this guy is a buddy of my neighbor, awkward :-/

I guess you could cross your fingers that he was just an idiot and didn't know he had to be in neutral to get it to shift out of 4-Lo? I think that'd be the best outcome for sure, haha.

This is why I always sit with the buyer for the test drive. There's too many knuckle heads these days that think they know how to drive. I would be hell pissed too.

Maybe the transfer case is jammed up?

That's a sticky situation. That happened to me one time, some lady wanted to buy my old truck for a "farm truck" and threw it into 4wd and broke it somehow. Wouldn't ever go back into 4hi again. Luckily she offered to pay for it. If it turns out to be expensive, you should let him know, nothing personal. It's just business. Needs to be held liable for his negligence. Never met someone who didn't know how to engage 4wd. If you don't know how to use it, you obviously don't need it.

he also shouldn't be driving in circles on pavement in 4-lo. talk about binding the drive line

who cares who it is. he broke it he buys the 4runner or pays to fix it.

I'd get it out in some gravel or sand somewhere, and go backwards in circles and see if you can free it up. It may be broken, but it may just be bound up really tight. Won't cost anything to try it.

Is it stuck in Hi or Lo, usually this happens it gets stuck in Hi and there is a sensor that needs replaced. Some good info in here.

Ha, I used to have to do that in my old ford bronco. Worked everytime.
