well its nice to know theres another dave fan here...
yeah but if you had bought the same rig just a year or two old, you would of not paid the 20-30% extra inflation that you lost the moment you drove it home from the dealer with that new car smell.... $8k is a lot to pay for that new car smell...
while yes i think its over priced its defiantly not outrageous for the PNW. and i would be there would be little to no rust on that. we do not salt the roads up here, we use a chemical de-icer, that is in no way shape or form as corrosive as salt. in ohio or maine they may salt the roads, but not here in the PNW -oregon washington idaho.
its funny how some people are. i have had my runner up for sale for the past month -i dont want to sell and dont need to sell, just looking to switch to something new, like a 100series LC... anyhow i have had my rig on cl in the portland area, and was taking offers on it, people would call or text or email asking questions, and asking me what my price was, i told them i was open to offers or trades but no body wanted to offer me more than $6k. i laughed at that guy and told him to get lost, after that when someone asked was i wanted and i told them that i had turned down a $6k offer no one would reply back... yes i think the fact that my truck has mods, like a winch and bumper, snorkel and other upgrades like suspension and wheels/tires makes it more valuable. also the fact that i have binder thats close to 2" thick full of records from day one. -it was dealer maintained for the first 180k mi, and was owned by a woman who commuted 130+ miles a day in it, she was a sales person for the dealer where it was bought.
now most everyone else wont agree with me on this and i can see your point, sure things like tires and wheels are a personal choice, and dont really add value(in some cases they can subtract value just as much or more so than they can add it), more over they are simply just items that sustain its value or keep it running. -you dont get more for you vehicle just because you use amsoil as apposed to the wal-mart brand do you? how about say if you run premium gas as apposed to regualr... but to me the fact that i know the history on this rig makes it more valuable to me than something else say like a newer 2002 sport edition with less miles on it. -also for someone who is looking to have a rig that looks nice and is capable and wants to show of or pose, but yet doesnt know how to do the work him self, then my rig is just what they are looking for, but they are going to have to pay for it. thats the way i look at it.
do i think the market is inflated up here? yes. but i also think its very jaded as well. there is a fairly high demand for them in the PNW, and being as though 95% of the ones out here are rust free and in good shape those of us who own one want what its worth. just cause you guys back east or in the midwest dont want to pay more than $5k for you supercharged 99 highlanders with the 5spd and a elocker and 180k miles doesnt mean that that same rig -only minus the rust out here wont fetch another $4k easily. -as we all know these trucks are capable of running 400k+ miles if taken care of. but salt is any cars number one enemy -number two is politicians (just like guns).
2002 4x4 Toyota 4Runner
this one is from back east, i can tell by all the rust, i stopped and looked at this one last weekend on the way home from a beach trip with some friends. its clean as clean can get on the exterior and interior, but the chassis is ate up something bad for the west coast, still not as bad as some of the ones i have seen from you guys back east though, but its not from around here originally. this is a trend i have been starting to see more and more. people will buy death bed runners back east for next to nothing, clean them up a little, roll back the odometer 40+k mi and then shoot some black paint over the chassis to hide the rust(just like the one i linked above) and then sell them for double and even tripple what they paid for them. also bringing the vehicle from out of state they can "wash" the title -meaning that if it had a salvaged, reconstructed, or branded title they could not disclose that when they bring it into the state and it would not transfer over(if they do it "correctly" and they know how to do it) and they would get a new clean title for a vehicle. most private sellers dont carfax, and to be honest carfax isnt all that accurate anyways, as i have seen several vehicles that have clear carfaxes but yet i can tell they have been hit, and hit hard.
just my thoughts.
but to the OP, yeah id take a look at it if it checks out it could be worth itbut i would try and talk them down to at least $7k
