Just on the sidenote: It should start without airfilter but make sure the MAF is connected. Otherwise it won't start.

If you have spark, but no kick with starting fluid, I strongly suggest you recheck plug wire routing, no matter how many times you think you have checked them. Use this diagram:

was this issue ever resolved my 97 is doing the exact same things, like exactly, have been checking and test for 3 days straight and am at a loss and about to go crazy. buy a toyota they said, itll run forever they said!
