theres a guy that posted in the high milage thread a while back that had like 630k on it. There's a reason that these things have the cult following that they do.
 
^ thats the one I was thinking of. Just got my numbers a little off. If I remember right it was a whole lot of highway miles, guy travels for work.

I turned 346000 as I rolled out of my neighborhood today. The insurance adjuster who looked at my truck today didn't believe I had that kind of mileage until he saw the odometer for himself!
 
As awesome that this is, this probably has to be super rare. Heck, even reaching 250k on the original tranny and engine I would think would be a feat in itself. Cars are so random. I seen guys on this forum who blew rods at 125k miles and cracked heads at 199k miles and they babied their 4runners. I its all a matter of having good luck I guess.

I agree. My truck ran like a champ until 199,800 miles and then it threw a code which ended up being a cracked head CYL#3.

Expecting beyond 250k miles on original heads is a bit of reach. I'm afraid the average lifespan is less than 250k.

I'm one of the FEW owners who have actually owned their 4Runner for 10+ years and can attest to the maintenance required to keep it tip top.

Despite this, it is a great truck and spending $2-3k for a rebuild or engine swap is still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a 5th gen.

I recall a mailman in Australia or something that put over a million miles on his Ranger with the original engine. rarely ever turned it off. cold starts are the death of engines.

Mine threw a code last Wednesday P303 (Cylinder 3 misfire) and I too have a cracked head with 227,541. Although it's been using water and fouling the #3 spark plug for the last year, so it's probably been cracked for awhile.

I meticulously maintain mine and it's never seen a trailer or gotten hot. But, $900 for a head, valve job, gaskets, w/p, timing belt, and tensioners isn't too bad. Hopefully I can get another 100K out of it.

All I can say is 205k and I've had it since 112k IIRC. I've abused it off road a bit, with overweight trailers (some with close to 24 hour straight drives) and probably hit WOT pretty close to every time I'm driving it. I have zero reason to believe it has a single issue engine or transmission wise. It has good power, fluids look good when I check/change them. Maybe for fun I'll do a quick compression test on it this week when I throw a fresh set of plugs in it.

I think I disagree with you're average lifespan number Brian. However, I like you am just thinking what I want to think.

It's also been in my family for the last 10+ years :hiding: :cheers:

but yes there are variances in the assembly line, it can be hit or miss, but i like to point out that a vest majority of other vehicles getting 250k is very rare if not impossible, i'd wager the number of this gen 4ruuner has a much higher percentage of trucks at that sort of mileage without major work being done, you gotta look at this as a comparison and not just in a vacuum.

i don't think my new one is going to go as long as my pristine one from '99 ....
 
That's one mod I think I'll skip doing! Did you see this happen or did you find it this way? I think I would have cried...
